Watching Sam take to the sky for his first solo flight has been one of the most powerful reminders of why we do this work. For the past four years, I have had the privilege of walking alongside Sam and his family through the NDIS, supporting him as he built a deeper understanding of himself, his strengths, and his neurodivergence.
The article shares the excitement of the day, but what it doesn’t show is the everyday work that made it possible. Sam has shown perseverance in a way that reflects the very heart of our values at Spear and Arrow. He has taken on challenges with courage, learned to advocate for his needs, and developed the confidence to pursue goals that once felt out of reach.
People once underestimated what he was capable of. Sam has rewritten that story entirely. His solo flight wasn’t just an achievement in aviation. It was the result of years of showing up, learning himself, and putting in the hard, consistent work that leads to real change the exact kind of growth we champion in our service .
His determination, his family’s unwavering support, and the network around him have created conditions where he could thrive. Being part of that journey has been an honour.
Sam’s story is proof of something we believe deeply: every young person has a future far brighter than what some may first see. With the right support, respect, and belief, they can soar beyond expectations, sometimes quite literally.
