The first Part I, Upper Body class held at Sundance Massage and Wellness in East Greenwich, RI was a great success. The class and the instructor, Krissy Viccione, got great student evals – so good, in fact, that we’ve scheduled another Part I, Upper Body class for November 12-14 of this year. Neil Taylor, a student in the first Sundance class wrote: Last weekend I was at a continuing ed course and I began talking with a therapist who had been practicing for 21 years. She said, the Howard Rontal MFR training she did was the most important and effective course she's taken in her career! So, I just thought I would pass that on.

The Bancroft School of Therapeutic Massage in Worcester, MA just announced that they are again offering continuing education. Our next Part I, Upper Body seminar is now scheduled for December 10-12. My very knowledgeable and engaging instructor, Krissy Viccione, will be teaching the class. One of Krissy’s great virtues as an instructor is that in her many years of using the Myofascial Release Massage, she has “seen it all” and thus she not only knows the work but she can tell you how to apply it in virtually every circumstance. This quote is from Lori McGee, a student in another class that Krissy taught earlier this summer. Lori wrote this a few days after she took the course: “I’ve done a little bit of MRM on a few clients these past two days – a client today was like OMG, I felt my shoulders drop!! I did the diaphragm and lower ribs on a client this morning who was having mid back pain. I love this stuff. Thank you so much!”

Clavicle Decompression

This is another stroke that I invented in the heat of a frustrating session. The client had suffered a fall from a garage roof and spent a month on bed rest and heavy duty pain meds. Another therapist (who I had trained) got her beyond the acute stage to a semblance of a functional if life in chronic pain. The fascial work I performed (and is taught in the Part I, Upper Body course) did not give the her significant relief from the constant numbness, pain, and tingling that she experienced in her arm. The work was useful, however, in that it loosened up the myofascial tissue attached to the clavicle and thus loosened up what might have kept the clavicle fixated. This maneuver freed up the clavicle at both the clavicular/manubrium joint and the clavicular/scapular joint. In so doing it lifted the clavicle off the brachial plexus and the brachial artery that is sandwiched between the clavicle and the first rib and this helped restore proper nerve signaling to the median, radial, and ulnar nerves. It’s now part of my standard repertoire for the treatment of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome and this is often part of how I treat of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The stroke is often painful so warn your clients before you attempt it. By the way, the results on the client I first used this on were miraculous – almost instant relief of pain and restoration of range of motion which is why I’ve used it ever since.

If a client is reporting nerve pain anywhere along the arm or into the hand (median, radial, and ulnar nerves) the source of the problems may be entrapment a...

I just received this email from a student in the Myofascial Release Massage, Upper Body class, held this past weekend at the Academy of Natural Health Sciences in Woodbridge, NJ:

Dear Howard,
I wanted to share my in class experience with you. I just had Part 1 Upper Body seminar with Krissy, the class was amazing, I love the simplicity and effectiveness of the techniques we learned. On Saturday, after one and a half day, I applied what I learned to my 24 years old daughter, Ada. She is a petite girl, works as a nurse, her posture was never great, her shoulder extension would never pass 160 degrees. After under hour treatment she got off the table and we were both amazed with the results. Ada’s back was straighter than I can ever remember, she could easily extend her arms to 180 degrees. The smile on her face was priceless. I only wish I knew those techniques 20 years ago. Thank you very much.
Best regards,
Tom

A video of the young woman mentioned above was sent out just before this post. It's a very sweet exchange between her and her father about what she experienced from his use of the Myofascial Release Massage. Please take a look.

Covid-19 and Pathological Blood-Clotting

Ruth Werner, the author of A Massage Therapists Guide to Pathology, published an excellent article in the July/August issue of Massage and Bodywork Magazine that I want to alert you to. To cut to the chase, Coronavirus sufferers can develop uncontrolled blood clotting (aka Covid-19 Related Coagulopathy). The clots can be small enough to block capillaries and “large enough to cause heart attacks, strokes, and pulmonary embolism” and both sizes of clots can occur in the same person at the same time. All this clotting can lead to multi-organ failure and autopsies reveal that this is the cause of death in 30-40% of those afflicted.

Because of the risk of infection from our clients (and to give them a heads up that they may need to test for Covid-19) it’s wise to screen them for this problem. To that end Werner suggests we add three questions to the Covid-19 section of our client intake form:

1. Can you exercise to get your heart rate and respiratory rate up without any problem? (This would indicate whether their cardiopulmonary function is unimpaired.)

2. Have you had a new onset of muscle aches and pains since the emergence of the virus? (This is a possible early sign of coagulopathy, and a reason to defer treatment until the person has been tested and cleared for coagulopathy risk.)

3. Have you seen any new marks, rashes, spots, bumps, or other lesions on your skin? (This indicates the possibility of micro-vascular clotting, and is reason to defer treatment until the person has been tested and cleared of coagulopathy risk.)
