We have revised our 2023 crop estimate down to 15.47M tonnes – about 430,000 tonnes less than the pre-season forecast.

Our mills have now processed about 40 per cent of the total re-estimated crop.

Throwback Thursday: Raw sugar being stored in sacks at the Bundaberg sugar shed. The Port of Bundaberg has a long history of receiving, storing, and shipping sugar, dating back to the 1870’s when sugar became an important asset to Bundaberg’s development.

Throwback Thursday: Unloading sacks of sugar at Cairns Port in 1958. Cairns Port, now known as White's Shed, was capable of storing 7,500 tonnes of sugar but was closed to sugar handling in the early 1960's. The closure led to the opening of the Cairns bulk sugar terminal in Portsmith in 1964.

Laboratory Technicians
SUGAR LABORATORY

Gateway Laboratories Pty Ltd is the leading provider of NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) accredited laboratory and testing services for the Queensland and Australian sugar industries.

The contract positions will be located at our Sugar Laboratory in East Brisbane, during the sugar-crushing season (approximately 6 months from the start of June 2022). The work involves the chemical analysis of sugar and sugar products using instrumental techniques.

Previous laboratory experience is preferred, a science/laboratory background isn’t essential though for the right applicant.

We are seeking applicants who possess the following characteristics;

• Chemistry study at a tertiary or TAFE level (including Sugar School)
• A Certificate/Diploma in Laboratory Technology (or equivalent work experience)
• Computer literacy.
• Capable of working independently after appropriate training.
• Previous experience in the sugar industry would be a distinct advantage.
• An appropriate work ethic for a commercial analytical environment.

In light of recent government announcements regarding COVID-19 (Coronavirus), we would like to advise you that Gateway Laboratories is currently operating as normal. We encourage our customers to continue working with us for all their testing and chemical requirements over the coming weeks and months.

The health, safety, and well-being of our team, clients, and community, including extended family, and minimising the risk of the virus spreading by providing a safe environment is our top priority.

We have a broad range of mitigation strategies in place to protect our team and ensure continuity of services moving forward. Our laboratory operates with strict health and hygiene procedures. We have restricted site visits and any visits to our laboratory are to be by approved appointment only.

We will continue to be guided by government updates, including Department of Health recommendations for minimising the risks and possible spread of COVID-19.

Like the rest of the world, we are monitoring the situation daily. We will communicate any changes as they come to hand.
