As the air turns crisp and the leaves fall, Autumn in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the season of the Lungs & Large Intestine:

Breath, Release & Letting Go,

In TCM, the Lungs take in oxygen or Qi, while the Large Intestine releases waste—physically and emotionally. Sadness is the emotion that weakens the Lungs, leading to fatigue, low immunity, and dryness. When the Large Intestine is sluggish, we may struggle to let go, both physically and mentally.

According to Giovanni Maciocia, the Lungs are the most external organ, easily affected by wind, dryness, and emotions.

We strengthen Lungs & Immunity with herbs like Bai He (Lily Bulb), Xing Ren (Apricot Kernel), and Mai D**g (Ophiopogon) which moisten and protect.

Lung-Nourishing recipe - Pear 🍐, Lily Bulb 🌸, Apricot Kernel 🌰which moistens lungs, soothes emotions, and supports digestion.

TCM Tips for Autumn:
Breathe deeply – Strengthen Lung Qi, practice Chi Gong.
Hydrate & eat warm foods – Prevent dryness in the lungs and Large Intestine.
Let go – Emotionally & physically.

Good research,

Our Getting To The Route campaign, highlighting Endometriosis Awareness Month, is proud to share relevant research into how Chinese herbal medicine can support people with endometriosis.

Firstly we bring RCHM member Dr Andrew Flower’s Cochrane review, which concluded that CHM had comparable effectiveness, with fewer side-effects, to gestrinone, a medication used in the treatment of endometriosis. According to research 28 million people in the UK (approximately 43% of the population) live in chronic pain (Fayaz et al, 2016). Historically pharmaceutical interventions in the form of opiates, paracetamol, ibuprofen, antiepileptic drugs and anaesthetics have been used to manage chronic pain. However the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) recently commented that “a number of commonly used drug treatments for chronic primary pain have little or no evidence that they work and shouldn’t be prescribed” (NICE, 2020). Within the same draft guidance acupuncture is recommended as an option for some people with chronic primary pain when delivered within certain defined parameters. In a 2018 meta-analysis researchers concluded that acupuncture is effective for the treatment of chronic pain, with treatment effects persisting over time. Specific effects of needling at correct acupuncture point locations were important contributors to the treatment effect (Vickers et al, 2018).

RCHM members who are professional acupuncturists complete degree level training over three years on specially accredited courses to develop their acupuncture skills. If you are experiencing chronic pain and would like to find out more about how acupuncture can help you visit www.rchm.co.uk
