🍁 Maple, 7 years ago today, after a traumatic flight from Qld in a crate with her crazy sibling! Trembling and anxious and extremely motion sick she sat and shivered on my lap all the way home. She slept for a solid hour, while we each thought ‘oh no, we got the quiet one!’ and then she woke up and climbed all over us and it was love love love, and now we occasionally think ‘sometimes it would be great to have the quiet one!’ but we would change a hair on her precious Vizsla head 🥰 🐶🥰

Wow. Just - wow 🥰

What happens when you land 16 women in the forest, feed them nourishing food, let them rest a lot, move a little, offer time to talk and think and wander?
🍂
Some sort of magic happens. Everything softens. Moment by moment, everything gets a little simpler. Each freezing morning is greeted with acceptance and extra layers. Each meal is a delight to the palate. Each question requires a pause, a ponder. Each persons story broadens our capacity for compassion. Even the difficult discussions, the ones that brought us to tears, cleared a path to understanding and greater awareness of how and why we are the way we are
🍂
Dwellingup really turned on the weather for us, which was such a bonus. The mornings were so cold! And misty and beautiful. The afternoons were almost balmy. We wore all our layers and gradually shed them, physically and mentally shucking them off. The bush trails were amazing, just challenging enough. We were surrounded by so many different birds! And chooks and roos/wallabies, a peacock and his harem of peahens, who were all eager recipients of our leftovers
🐥
There was self guided painting and drawing and writing. Some listened to music for the first time in ages. Some slept in. Some walked the same walking loop over and over as a form of meditation🙋🏼‍♀️ Some wandered so far they needed to rely on the kindness of strangers to get back, and had the story to tell about it. For some it was the first time away doing this kind of thing, and it started daunting and overwhelming but by the end they were signing up for next year
💕
There was such simplicity, I think that is what has really stuck with me. In lives which are layered with obligations to family and work and life admin and socialising, there is little time for self reflection, whether that is deliberate, such as through our workshops, or organic, when we were simply watching the leaves fall to the ground
🍂
It was an amazing weekend with such a diverse group of women, each magnificent in their own way. As always it was such a privilege to be there to watch them settle into themselves
🍂
I can't wait to do it all over again🥰
Much love,

💕 To all the beautiful women I know, whether you are a mother to little people or dogs or cats or lizards, a widow, an orphan, a daughter, the fun aunt, a sister, a carer, a best friend or any other iteration of being a woman in this world, know this:

You are magnificent. You are absolutely doing your best. You are wise, and funny, and so loving. I admire you for your brains and body building and artistic talents. I admire the way you do jigsaw puzzles and keep your family together and always pick up the phone when I call. I admire your smiles despite adversity, and tears when they need to be shed. I am in awe of the way you can pick up the pieces and keep your family together. I admire your honesty and filthy sense of humour and the way you sing the words wrong. I love that, despite your inability to read maps, you know exactly where you are going. I love seeing your name on my phone and the way we launch, mid-sentence, into our conversation. I am so impressed that you have bought hiking boots at 73. I love that you wear fluffy jumpers even in the humidity. I love that you have so much fashion sense when I have none. I love that your current mantra is ‘It all belongs’ despite your body being ravaged. I am humbled by the way you cared for your dying loved one with such grace and honesty. I am heartened that your mothering will provide a safe passage for your daughters to heal. It makes me feel safe to know that you are watching over our suburb, surrounded by lamps, when I am away. I admire your capacity to show up and rage and rant and be angry and just as quickly dissolve into sadness. And to do this over and over again until the sadness lifts and some light creeps in. I love our hugs. Our meandering conversations. Our inside jokes. Our silliness. Our beach walks and long chats and the hilarity that is found at the bottom of a bottle or two of champagne at a bench scattered with Cheezel crumbs🍾🥳

I love all the women I know. Flawed, functional, funny, fearless, fabulous. Whatever your plan is for Sunday 11 May, I hope you celebrate your magnificent self. All that matters is that you know how much you matter🥰

Much love,
Amanda xx

Just one step ...

There is something about putting one foot in front of the other that gives me such pleasure. While a smooth, flat path may make the journey easier and quicker, I find it so much more immersive when the ground is rocky, a bit slippery, on a slope or pushed up beneath an overhang. I have to concentrate and place each dusty boot with care, and then trust that I have made the right choice.

This means that I can miss much of what is around me. I need to take the time to pause, look up and around. Look back - so very far back - and see the tiny figures still yet to make it to where I stand. Look ahead, way in the distance, and accept how far I still have to go. With equal parts satisfaction and trepidation, I set off again, one step at a time.

Isn't this so much like life? Especially when we have accumulated so many years and taken so many steps to land right where we are. If you look ahead, what do you see?

Sometimes we race towards what is ahead - a celebration, an adventure, an achievement. Other times we may drag our feet in the dirt if facing uncertainty, illness, or loss. Sometimes the path is obstructed. Sometimes it seems like it doesn't exist.

What do we do if the circumstances of life have us turning on the spot, immobilized by fear, anger, or heartbreak? When it seems like one step in any direction is an impossible task?

Pause. Look up. Look back. See how far you have come. Remember other times that it felt too hard, but you managed. Maybe take a rest for a while, just where you are. Perhaps you wait for someone else to join you, and pause together. You might not feel like moving, but eventually, you must. So, take a deep breath. Turn in the direction of the path ahead. Take one step. Then another. And another. Take your time. There is no hurry.

Eventually, there will be enough steps between where you are and where you were to look back and recall that time when it felt so very hard, but you did it anyway. And here you stand, with another view, and perhaps a different path ahead. Each step changes us, walking us closer to the person we are gradually becoming. Each step creates its own path, perhaps clearing the way for those who follow.

As 2025 unfolds, may each step land you in the direction you wish to go. I'd like you to think of the studio and the time we spend together as your own comfortable seat, a resting place where you can settle in for a while, observe, then step back onto the path, restored and nourished by you own loving attention.

Much love,
Amanda xx
