Benjamin Sesko: knee issues

After coming on as a second half substitute in Man U’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham, Sesko suffered a knee injury and could not finish the game.
There was no distinct mechanism, and apparently initial ligament tests were ok. But Manchester United were worried enough to finish the game a man short.
I suspect he has an internal joint ni**le- like an irritated meniscus, but we’ll wait to see what scans show and how long he’s out for. Surely if it was just a knock, or tendon issue he would have been encouraged to play on?

Trae Young 🏀

Basketball star Trae Young suffered a right knee MCL sprain during a game against the Brooklyn Nets last week. MRI results revealed no major structural damage, with his ACL and meniscus remaining intact. The Atlanta Hawks announced that he will be out for at least four weeks before being re-evaluated. Fortunately, the injury is considered moderate and is not expected to require surgery.

The medial collateral ligament (MCL) plays a key role in stabilizing the inner knee and is one of the most commonly injured ligaments in athletes. Fortunately, most MCL injuries heal without surgery because the ligament has a strong blood supply that supports natural recovery. Rehabilitation typically focuses on strengthening the quadriceps and hamstrings to restore knee stability as well as proprioceptive exercises. Athletes with mild to moderate MCL sprains can often return to play within three to six weeks, depending on the severity of the injury and their progress in rehabilitation.

Special thanks you All Saints' College, Maitland for having us up there yesterday to show the students some of the technology and data we use with patients and athletes. It was great to see the students engage so well and ask some great questions. And their athletic performance was very impressive too.
Cheers to Mr Whereat and physio Zac for organising.

📚 Journal Club

Jamie’s latest journal club article dives into cricket. It explores what the research says about bone health, recovery, and return-to-play strategies.

🏏 Even strong bones can overload: Elite fast bowlers with lumbar stress fractures had slightly lower spine bone density than uninjured peers.

🏏 Asymmetry plays a role: The opposite to bowling-side of the spine showed increased density in uninjured bowlers, likely due to repetitive one-sided loading.

🏏 Recovery is slow: After injury, bone density dropped further and took nearly a year to return to pre-injury levels.

🏏 Bowling-specific load is key: Regular gym training alone didn’t restore bone density; sport-specific loading was essential.

🏏 Monitor and manage: Tracking spinal bone health and using gradual return-to-play plans may reduce re-injury risk.

Samoa’s big win... but what if Taumalolo had played?

Samoa scored a big victory over Tonga this weekend in the Pacific Rugby League Championship. Though it might’ve been a different story if Jason Taumalolo had been on the field for Tonga.

Taumalolo remains sidelined after undergoing arthroscopic knee “clean-out” surgery around 8 weeks ago, following an NRL season heavily impacted by a degenerative cartilage issue. Tonga are hopeful he’ll be fit to return next week.

A “clean-out” typically involves removing loose cartilage or bone fragments and smoothing rough or damaged joint surfaces to reduce irritation and swelling. While often labelled as minor, recovery can vary widely especially when underlying cartilage wear is present.

From a rehab perspective, key goals include:
✅Restoring joint range and mobility
✅Rebuilding core and leg strength
✅Progressing load tolerance and movement control under fatigue
✅Managing inflammation and symptom flare-ups with gradual load exposure

For degenerative cartilage problems, long-term management relies on consistent strength training, load monitoring, and recovery strategies to keep the joint healthy and performance levels high, rather than aiming for a complete “fix.”

A new systematic review demonstrates how physiotherapy is key in managing MCL injuries, helping patients recover faster, stronger, and without surgery.

Early movement, progressive loading, and structured rehab make all the difference!

Leading into a big summer of Cricket and the upcoming home ashes series, there is currently lots of speculation around whether Australian captain Pat Cummins will be available for selection.

Cummins has been sidelined since July with what is being called ‘lumbar bone stress injury’. These types of injuries are common in cricketers, in particular pace bowlers due to the mechanism of their bowling action. It is worth noting Cummins has had a history of lower back issues, particular during the early stages of his career.

Reports suggest Cummins is yet to return to bowling. Rehabilitation up to this point, would have involve a period rest from bowling whilst undergoing specific conditioning and strength training.

Given the series is due to commence on the 21st of November, it will be interesting to follow Pat’s participation in the early parts of the series.
