Sometimes finding the right words for talking to children can be really, really challenging. When choosing how to respond to texta on the wall, or the unending ‘why?’ battle, or simply trying to keep healthy open communication with the child who doesn’t want to talk, the words don’t always come so easily.

Each month this year a phrase will be shared that may help in such moments.

“I’m sorry ….’
Children aren’t always the ones making mistakes. When we apologise we model how to make appropriate apologies, but also teach children that we all make mistakes.

Children generally find it easy to talk about the here and now. However, having conversations about the future helps them to use more abstract and sophisticated language as well as to increase their awareness of differences in time.
One way to talk about the future is to make a prediction.

“What I know is ….’
There are times children tell us things we KNOW are not true. Whether it’s lying, magical thinking, or a complete misunderstanding, we can avoid an argument or an overreaction by calmly commenting what we know. For example, “What I know is there were four biscuits on the plate when I left” “What I know is Jesse’s mum was not home today”.
