Well how blessed am I to land in Eidsvold. Thank you to all those who have been coming to my home and now into the store since I opened. Thank you to all those who have been telling their friends and families about how good the massages are. Thank you to all of you have supported me. And thank you to those who have come in for the first time or who have experienced their first ever massage. I am truly honoured, grateful and feel very blessed. 2 things I prattle on about a lot, that are so important to our mobility and stability, is the butt and gut. The most common reason older people have trips and falls, is that the core muscles have weakened and therefore have a lessened ability to move quickly to stabilise the body. From the diaphragm to the pelvic floor as well as the side muscles, helps to stabilise the body, create balance and helps to maintain good posture. The gluteus muscles are literally the powerhouse behind forward movement. They help to stabilise the hips, helps with balance and control lower body movements. If these become weak, trips and falls possibility increases, posture suffers, balance is compromised, and disfunction of movement leading to pain and compensation patterns can occur. So what can we do? There is no need to go to the gym or do countless hours of work outs and exercises. Some simple things we can do to help activate and gently increase muscle strength are as follows:
1: Standing at a table, or bench, place a hand on the table or bench, then lift 1 foot off the floor, being mindful to use the gut muscles to lift and mindful that glutes are switching on, on the grounded foot. When you feel comfortable doing this you can remove the the hand, knowing that you have the bench there to place it back down if needed.
2: Laying in bed, bend your knees and place your feet on the bed. Place your arms out wide beside you for stability. Gently start to rock the knees from side to side, being mindful to only go as far as you are comfortable to do. Focus on the core muscles and glutes to create the movement. Once you have mastered that movement, dropping the knees to the bed, you could lift the feet and do the same movement, but that is only once you find the first move easy.
3: When walking, lift the breast plate towards your chin, and when the back foot is about to leave the ground be mindful that you are pushing off your big toe.
4: When climbing stairs, rather than lifting the leg up to the next step, try purposely pushing down on the top leg, using the glutes, and using momentum to assist in bringing the bottom leg up.
