Please join us in welcoming our Graduate Nurse Transition Program (GNTP) participants for 2026!

These nurses are starting their careers with Calvary this week, having been successful in obtaining a placement in this structured program, designed to help them confidently transition from student to registered clinician.

Supported by dedicated coordinators, preceptors and clinical educators, the program includes a comprehensive orientation, study days, and ongoing learning opportunities to help consolidate knowledge and build strong clinical practice.

Here at Central Districts, our GNTPs will work across a range of acute medical and surgical services over the next 12 months. This year, we are also especially delighted to welcome for the very first time, graduates who will work at the Calvary Connery Centre. Simona and Rietta will be working with the team there to care for our oncology patients.

We welcome all GNTPs to the Calvary family, and wish them a long and fulfilling career.

It’s often hard to know how best to help someone who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Rhonda’s tip: If you have wide network of people who want to help, sometimes it can be overwhelming to have everyone offer support individually. My Rotary club nominated one person to contact me and then coordinate a group, which worked really well.

There is also a website Gather My Crew which does the same kind of thing online.

When a friend or loved one is diagnosed with cancer, it’s often hard to know what to say.

Dennis’ tip: “I found some people avoid getting in touch – maybe because they don’t know what to say or they might be worried about upsetting me.

You could try ‘I’m really sorry to hear about your diagnosis – how are you going?’ and then give them the space to respond. If they want to talk about it – they will, and if not – that’s ok. Reach out by phone or in person, and simply ask how they’re going. You’ll quickly sense whether they want to talk about it or not. If they don’t, a hand on the shoulder or a hug can still mean a lot. Don’t worry about upsetting them or ‘reminding’ them of what’s happening - they won't have forgotten. It’s much better than pretending everything is ok.”

At the end of last year, the Patient Services Team, led by our Wellbeing Champion Pam, worked incredibly hard to organise a Christmas Raffle in support of Orange Sky Australia — a charitable organisation that provides free laundry services and a friendly conversation to people doing it tough in our community.

We were fortunate to receive generous donations from several local businesses, including T & J Construction, Australia Post (Parabanks and Elizabeth Vale), Southern Model Supplies, Star Discount Chemist Hollywood Plaza, and the Playford Lions Club. Their support helped make the raffle a great success. With an original fundraising goal of $1,000, the team was thrilled to raise an outstanding $1,873. Four lucky winners enjoyed their prizes just before Christmas.

Recently, Orange Sky representative Alan visited to accept the donation and provided members of our team with valuable education about the vital services offered by Orange Sky, as well as other charitable organisations such as Fred’s Van.

A huge thank you to everyone involved for their generosity, teamwork, and commitment to supporting our community.

Our wonderful volunteers came together for a special Christmas lunch today.
Lovingly prepared by our hospitality team, the lunch was a fun way for the volunteers to connect and celebrate in the lead up to the silly season. Managers and staff were on hand to ensure the volunteers enjoyed the festivities, and know just how much they are appreciated.

Volunteers work across the hospital and Connery Centre on John Rice Ave, looking after patients and helping staff in a myriad of ways.

A huge thank you to each and every one of our dedicated volunteers, and a very Merry Christmas from the bottom of our hearts!

Congratulations also to our team Award Nominees, and to overall winners – the Day Surgery Unit!

The day surgery team works very cohesively. Everyone is kind, caring, compassionate and friendly to staff and patients. We are very professional in our daily work and uphold the Calvary values in all that we do. We show our stewardship to the future generations of nurses with all of the mentoring we provide to our students. We support each other and our staff morale is excellent. We are like a big family always laughing and the patients enjoy the friendly atmosphere when they come in for surgery. It always makes them feel welcome and at ease. We are a wonderful department to work in and everyone deserves the recognition of their hard work.

The day surgery team show all of Calvary values.
Respect - they value and respect the dignity of all patients coming into the department. They treat the patients with kindness and support the anxious when needed.

They are always happy and work with a smile. No job is too small, and always go above and beyond not just for the patients, but for each other. Team work.

They have empathy and compassion for all. They are the beginning and ending for patient advocacy throughout the patients admission.
