Harmony Week reminds us that belonging and feeling safe are shaped through our everyday actions and through how safe people feel when accessing our services. Today also marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This day is a global reminder that racism, whether overt or subtle, causes real harm and creates barriers to safety, belonging and wellbeing.
At DPV Health, this matters deeply. We work across two of Victoria’s most culturally and linguistically diverse communities:
Hume City Council
· 45% of residents were born overseas
· 7.5% of the population are refugees
City of Whittlesea
· 42% of residents were born overseas
· 2.1% of the population are refugees
Across both LGAs, many community members speak languages other than English and may experience barriers to accessing care.
These figures reinforce why culturally safe, language responsive and community informed care is essential across all DPV Health services.
Harmony Week and the elimination of racial discrimination remind us that inclusion isn’t symbolic, it is something we commit to and practice together, every day.
