Did you know today is Global Running Day? We love running at Deall Dental, but what happens when RUNNING literally HURTS your TEETH? 🏃😬
👉 Common causes of teeth pain while running:
❄️ The cold winter air can be chilly on your teeth! Breathing heavily with your mouth open can cause tooth pain in cold weather.
🏃Increases in blood flow can increase pressure. Increases in blood flow while running can increase pressure in inflamed teeth and cause pain.
😐 Clenching your mouth closed while running! Clenching can not only cause pain in teeth, but it can also cause pain in your chewing muscles which can lead to headaches.
🥤 Drinking sports and energy drinks to quench your thirst can lead to tooth decay! When we run, our mouths often get dry, which means there is less saliva protecting our teeth from acid and plaque. This can cause tooth decay!
💡 What to do?
Listen to your body. If your teeth are sensitive to cold air, avoid running on colder days or use a treadmill. And try running on a rubber track or a softer surface to minimise vibration if you notice that you are clenching your teeth.
Reach for water instead of sports and energy drinks! If they are your running drink of choice, make sure you flush that sugar and acid away with plenty of water.
If your teeth pain doesn't settle down, it may indicate an underlying problem. In such cases, it is best to consult with a Dentist.
Happy Global Running Day! ✨🏃✨
