Inspiration can and does come from anywhere. Just roll with it. Even if it is in a different direction than you would usually go. Just entertain the thought and see where it leads. Sometimes it can be so freeing to break the mould and try something new.

Take this pattern for example, yep, still a repetitive pattern but, I have been focusing on geometric designs, aztec inspired designs and 3D geometric shapes. The inspiration for this pattern came from the wire binding on the very book I have been drawing in this last month. It turned out to be a simplified repeated pattern in fun and funky colours, but it started out as a random thought.

Did you know all artists suffer from imposter syndrome from time to time? No-one is immune. You just get the feeling that your last art piece was your best and you will never create something that good again. Or, maybe there is a creative block. You don't know what ti create next or where to begin. This can happen in other areas of your life too.

You open the fridge and see it full of fresh food but you don't know what to have for lunch. Getting ready to catch up with friends but can't decide what to wear... A simple way to flip the switch and get out of that funky slump is to create something less than great, on purpose. Get out a pen and some paper and grid up the page then lay down a simple, average pattern. Don't think too hard about the colours or the end product. Just get it done. Now that you have that out of your system, your next decision has to be a better one. Right?

Sometimes your brain just asks for something simple. Just a series of lines. Nothing fancy. Just nice, neat, evenly spaced, straight lines. Sometimes your brain just needs a visual representation of your goals. A kind of road map. Where are you now, where are you headed, and how will you get there? No words needed. Just lines. This can be expressed through colour.

By using fairly neutral colours you can shoe the evolution of your journey without assigning specific emotions to the steps along the way. For example, in this pattern I have a large block of white lines moving across the center of the page. This represents where I am now, at peace with new beginnings and a little innocent as I step into new territory. At the edges of whitewe have grey, I know that I need to remain balanced and will need to compromise, which will grow my wisdom and maturity. And then finally at the corners I have black. This is where I am headed, to power, elegance and sophistication. There is no clear path. I can take any line I want.

Have you ever looked at a painting and been drawn in by the colour? Or maybe you tend to reach for the same colours in your wardrobe? Do you sometimes feel like your emotions have colours? Kinda like the characters in the Disney Pixar movie, Inside Out. Joy is yellow, Anger is red...

Colour can be used to represent how we feel, it can also be used to influence our mood and decision making.

If you feel like you need to shift your mood, why not try creating a pattern of colour blocked shapes. Here I have created two patterns that use similar colours. They represent cooler colours on the colour wheel. Purple is often associated with creativity, pleasure, wisdom and spirituality. Blue evokes feelings of calm, stability, trust and focus, while green is often used to represent renewal, contentment, growth and freshness.

Can you guess what I was going for here? I was creating these patterns to relieve overwhelm and stress. The large shapes and saturated colours suggest a calmer mood and fresh start in a simple, yet visually pleasing way.

Sometimes, things are just swirling around in your head, you become overwhelmed and you begin to self sabotage. Why not get those swirling thoughts out of your head and onto paper. No need to put words to the thoughts. Literally draw out the swirls. You could do this organically, but I prefer a bit of structure. Drawing a grid tells my brain it is time to draw, and then creating these squarish swirls gets all of the chaos from my brain and leaves it on the page. Each line left on the page is like leaving one stressful thought behind. The end result is a series of swirls that are no longer causing chaos in my brain. It also ends up looking a little like a simplified representation of a brain.

Often we can become so caught up in our own chaotic and busy world that it can be hard to carve out time for self-care. This is often when we need it most. If you are looking for a way to hit reset, that doesn't involve hours of your time, try creating a simple pattern. Creating a pattern gets your hands moving, it moves things from your brain to the paper, freeing up space and allowing you to refocus. Creating a pattern with a larger grid, means bigger shapes and less intricate details, which means the process takes less time. Don't rush the process though, every carefully placed line is calming your mind.

Some repetitive patterns are satisfying to look at once complete, you can imagine them on fabric or packaging, maybe they could be an amazing wall hanging or the desktop image on your laptop. It is satisfying because it brings order to your chaos. Some repetitive patterns are even more satisfying to create. Take this one for example. The end result is great, but focusing on each element as it is being drawn, and watching the whole page slowly evolve into something else is mesmerising. Everything else that is filling up your brain just melts away for a moment. I mean, the end result is super cool, but how neat was the process!

Sometimes when you have the urge to draw, you have no idea what to draw. This is known as a paradox of choice, where there are so many options that you become overwhelmed and unable to make a decision. Or perhaps you have imposter syndrome and believe that you are not a real artist, so what's the point. Well, I will let you in on a little secret. You don't have to be a 'famous artist' with a 'viral' social media account to draw. All you need is a pen, a piece of paper and to start making marks. One way to combat that paradox of choice is to draw up a grid. The 'canvas' is no longer blank and you now have a framework to begin creating magic.

So we know the human brain craves patterns, symmetry and repetition, but did you know it also craves variety? Variety can spark imagination, creativity and innovation. So, when creating patterns in an attempt to self-regulate your emotions, you can add little touches of variety in a number of ways. You could use different coloured pens, different thicknesses of lines, or you could combine two repetitive patterns, creating a whole new pattern.

Here, I have created a black diamond pattern and weaved a blue striped pattern through it. Two simple repetitive patterns, with a little variety to challenge the mind.

Why don't you give it a go? Start simple and watch the magic unfold.
