March is just about done, and didn’t we live it up here at Finley Regional Care!

We were very busy hosting an Autumn-themed activities afternoon where we had a lot of different events on show for our residents! These included a pop-up coffee and cake stall run by our wonderful receptionist Isabella and a carnival game stand where the residents could try a game of Quoits (and a lot of residents won beautiful plush toys)! Our amazing volunteer Wendy was busy manning the Relaxation Station, where the residents could have a foot bath, a pedicure or even a foot massage! And finally, we had a craft corner, where we made bird feeders and tried our hand at flower pressing with gorgeous flowers donated by our very own Paige and her family.

We had been busy with a visit from Biralee Preschool, during which we taught them one of our favourite active games and shared some laughs. To celebrate NSW Senior’s Week, we were invited to the Finley Library for a gorgeous morning tea hosted by Finley’s finest Librarian, Ros, and had a very inspiring talk with Gail Joley about the importance of moving our bodies as we age. We all came back with new tips and tricks to help with mobility!

St Patrick’s Day was celebrated with a morning tea, and we served shamrock shortbread cookies that we baked together the day before – delicious, if we might say so ourselves!
We were visited by a lovely dog named Possum who we shared a lot of pats with, and had a few good yarns with his owner, Trevor!

The last half of our month got us moving and grooving with three concerts and a birthday party to celebrate all our March birthdays.

If you’re starting to notice everyday tasks taking a little more effort – cooking, cleaning, driving, showering, keeping up with the garden – it’s completely normal to feel a mix of emotions. For many people, home isn’t just a house. It’s independence, comfort, memories, and community.

The good news is: you don’t have to jump straight from “managing fine” to “moving into care.” There are several supportive steps in between, and many people combine a few options over time as needs change.

Below are practical, reassuring options to consider, so you can stay safe, supported, and connected for as long as possible:

Big things are happening at Finley Regional Care 👏

We’ve partnered with Charles Sturt University (CSU) to expand the Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) Program – helping create new training demonstration sites in aged care across regional communities.

Why it matters: the RHMT program is all about supporting more medical, nursing, dental and allied health professionals to live and work rurally, now and into the future.

This collaboration means:
✅ more real-world learning for CSU students
✅ more professional development and training opportunities for our team
✅ a stronger focus on staff and student wellbeing

And thanks to CSU and the Three Rivers Department of Rural Health, we now have a modern new training room onsite (at the end of House #1), supported through grant funding and new equipment.

Because investing in training is investing in better care – right here in Finley.

Your story, your choice: what advance care planning really is (and what it isn’t)

For many of us, the idea of “planning ahead” can feel confronting, especially when it comes to health and future care. But advance care planning isn’t about expecting the worst. It’s about making sure your values, your voice, and your preferences are understood, even if there’s a time when you can’t explain them yourself.

That’s why National Advance Care Planning Week (16–22 March 2026) is such an important reminder. This year’s theme (“Your story, your choice”) encourages people to pause, reflect on what matters most, and have a conversation that can bring real clarity and peace of mind.

If you’ve been thinking, “I’m getting older… I should probably do something about this,” you’re not alone. Here’s a practical guide to what advance care planning really is (and what it isn’t), plus some simple steps to help you begin:

Today, we’re celebrating the women who’ve shaped our world – and our home. 💜 The women at Finley Regional Care have lived through so much: raising families, building careers, leading communities, and showing quiet strength in everyday ways.

This International Women’s Day, we’re honouring their stories, their resilience, and the warmth they bring to those around them – every single day.

To the women of our home, our families, and our community: thank you.

Happy International Women’s Day. 🌸

What we’ve been up to in February 🙌

We kicked off February with a fabulous concert put on by Jackie Lee and her right-hand man, Doug. The residents really enjoyed singing along and it was a great start to the month.

Morning exercises with Monica the physio are always a hit, and the numbers of participants keep growing and growing!

We had a very active morning when we had the Finley Olympic Games. A big well done to all who competed and especially those who returned with a gold medal!

We had some beautiful home-grown tomatoes donated to the facility and Chef Lisa created a beautiful relish (with help from our residents), which can be found in all the house dining rooms at mealtime. The crafters created gorgeous handmade labels to put on our relish jars, and they look and taste fantastic!

We wrapped up the month with another fabulous concert put on by Keith Haidle and a birthday party for all those who were born in the month of February!

Heart Health Month – Supporting seniors’ wellbeing inside and out

February is often associated with Valentine’s Day and celebrations of love, but it is also widely recognised as Heart Health Month – a timely reminder of the importance of caring for our hearts.

For older Australians, heart health plays a vital role in overall wellbeing. But heart health is about more than medical check-ups. It is also connected to lifestyle, emotional wellbeing, movement, nutrition, and community support.

At Finley Regional Care, we believe in caring for the whole person — supporting not only physical health, but also the emotional and social wellbeing that helps residents live fully and comfortably. Find out how aged care can support heart health here:

👩‍⚕️ More nursing support, more reassurance for residents and families 👩‍⚕️

We’re excited to share that Finley Regional Care now has a larger team of registered nurses on site.

With two registered nurses on most daytime shifts, residents will benefit from even greater clinical support, stronger care oversight, and faster access to professional attention when needed.

This has been an important focus for us as we continue striving to provide the highest standard of care and peace of mind for our community, and we’re super excited to be able to offer an even higher level of care!

Recently we've been pleased to welcome Michelle, our newest recruit, who has already settled in wonderfully. 💙

At Finley Regional Care, we’re committed to ensuring residents have access to important allied health services that support comfort, independence and quality of life.

Our visiting optometrist, Aeman, will continue monthly appointments throughout 2026, helping residents maintain healthy vision and eye care.

We’re also looking forward to welcoming Broadway Smiles Dentist back again soon, providing dental checks and minor treatments on site — making oral health care more accessible and convenient for residents.

These regular visits play an important role in supporting overall health and wellbeing, right here at home. 👓🦷

✨ Exciting clinical upgrades are coming to Finley Regional Care in 2026!

We’re introducing new vital signs monitoring equipment, including updated trolleys with blood pressure machines, pulse oximeters, blood sugar monitors, thermometers and iPads. Results will be recorded instantly, reducing paperwork and minimising errors, which means more time for our team to focus on what matters most: quality time and care with residents.

We’re also trialling innovative pressure-monitoring mattresses designed to detect high-risk areas early and help significantly reduce pressure sores — supporting greater comfort and wellbeing.

And to top it off, our visiting dietitian Jodie will be on site monthly, working closely with residents and our kitchen team to ensure meals are both nutritious, seasonal and enjoyable.

A wonderful year of improved care, comfort and support is ahead! 💙
