This is a powerful article about how St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne has tailored its Emergency Department care for First Nations patients and how it has helped close the gap in wait times between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people without affecting overall patient flow.

We’re glad to have the support of the Australian Medical Association, Australian Indigenous Doctors' Association, Australasian College for Emergency Medicine , The Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation(Victoria) and the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) in this important work.

Delivering specialised care to the most vulnerable groups in our community is a core part of our work, and we will continue taking steps to achieve the best health outcomes for all our patients.

AI in healthcare is evolving fast. From home-care robots to clinical chatbots, new technologies are transforming the way care is delivered across Australia.

“Clients still receive a weekly face-to-face meeting, but between these meetings … the [AI] system allows a daily check-in, which can then escalate any potential concerns to either our team or a client’s family,” said Dean Jones, National Director of St Vincent’s At Home to Guardian Australia.

We see AI as a tool to support, not replace, the compassion and expertise of our people. Every innovation we embrace must strengthen our mission to provide better and fairer care. Always.

St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne welcomed The Hon. Enver Erdogan MP Minister for Corrections, to our C No More mobile health service, which brings free point-of-care hepatitis C testing and treatment to people in community corrections, streamlining standard care options.

Run by nurses and peer workers, the program meets people where they are, offering a safe, non-judgmental space to ask questions, get tested and start treatment on the spot.

Professor Alexander Thompson at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, said partnerships like C No More show what’s possible when health and justice services work together to remove barriers to care. “This is how we reach people who might otherwise miss out on life-changing treatment,” they said.

Peer mentor Mark Belzer sees the difference first-hand. “We meet people where they are and empower them with the tools to take control of their health,” he said.

C No More is provided by St Vincent’s in partnership with Burnet Institute and Harm Reduction Victoria, with support from Gilead Sciences, St Vincent's Hospital and NHMRC Synergy Grant and the Victorian Department of Health. Together, we’re working toward a future where Victoria’s justice system is free of hepatitis C.

Did you know, St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne has a special connection with Australia's first op shop?

This week marks 100 years since, Lady Millie Tallis set up an "opportunity shop" at an abandoned Cyclorama – a large space used to view panoramic pictures – on the corner of Victoria Parade and Fitzroy Street. She thought up the idea of a pop-up store selling second-hand items to raise funds for St Vincent’s as part of a major appeal.

The "opportunity shop" was a raging success, and the money raised helped St Vincent’s purchase new beds and vital facilities including X-ray equipment.

One hundred years on, ABC visited St Vincent’s to speak to Archivist Barbara Cytowicz and Medical Imaging Operations Manager Stuart Baum about this special part of our history.

St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne’s Australian-first clinical trial of psychedelic-assisted therapy is the topic of a new documentary, premiering this weekend at the Adelaide Film Festival.

During the trial, St Vincent’s clinician researchers Dr Marg Ross and Dr Justin Dwyer worked with Emmy award-winning filmmaker Lynette Wallworth, who followed two terminally ill trial participants as they navigated their psilocybin-assisted therapy. Lynette has a long relationship with the Yawanawa people of the Brazilian Amazon, which enabled the clinicians to also travel to the Amazon to explore traditional uses of these types of medicines.

Edge of Life will be released in cinemas nationally from 13 November 2025.
