45° Cuts: Introducing Change of Direction 🏃‍♂️↪️

This drill is a simple, low-threat way to introduce COD mechanics before higher-speed chaos.

Key cues 👇
• Lower the centre of mass before the cut
• Outside foot plants slightly ahead and under the hip
• Shin angle matches direction of travel
• Eyes up, chest over knee, push away not across
• Short, sharp re-acceleration out of the cut

Body positioning matters
Good COD isn’t about slamming the brakes.
We want controlled deceleration → stable trunk → efficient re-acceleration.
If the trunk stays tall or the foot lands too far outside the body, load goes straight to the knee.

How to progress the drill
1️⃣ Start at sub-max speed, pre-planned direction
2️⃣ Increase approach speed
3️⃣ Add repeated reps (fatigue)
4️⃣ React to a visual or verbal cue
5️⃣ Progress to sharper angles or add in sport-specific tasks such as a catch or pass

Build shapes first. Speed comes later.
Prepare the tissues before the chaos.

Save this for your next field session.

WHY DO SOFT TISSUE INJURIES REALLY HAPPEN?

There’s no single cause - but one of the biggest risk factors is poorly managed high-velocity exposure.

They happen when velocity is introduced too fast, too often, or without preparation.

But how do you manage velocity without GPS?

I’ve broken down a simple, practical way to estimate velocity exposure in a free guide.

Comment “SPEED” and I’ll send it through.
