Tennis Elbow vs. C6 Nerve Compression
Donβt get fooled β elbow pain isnβt always just βtennis elbowβ!
In the clinic, when someone comes in with pain on the outside of the elbow, soreness in the forearm, or pain and weakness when gripping, most people (and even some therapists) immediately think of tennis elbow.
But thereβs another common β and even more important β cause that is often missed:
π C6 nerve root compression from the neck.
Both problems can cause arm weakness and difficulty using the wrist or fingers, so they can be easily confused.
If we only treat the elbow and ignore the neck, the pain usually doesnβt improve β sometimes it even gets worse.
1οΈβ£ Tennis Elbow β Local Tendon Overuse
Tennis elbow happens when the forearm tendons are overused from activities like gripping, lifting, twisting, or using a mouse and keyboard for too long.
This causes small tears and inflammation in the tendon near the outside of the elbow.
π Key signs:
β Pain is local and sharp, right at the elbow
β There is a clear painful spot when pressed
β Pain gets worse when gripping, lifting, or twisting
β No numbness or tingling, and neck movement does not affect the pain
With proper treatment to reduce tension and improve mechanics, most people feel much better within a few sessions.
2οΈβ£ C6 Nerve Compression β Often Mistaken for Elbow Pain
The C6 nerve comes from the neck and controls your biceps, wrist extension, and feeling in the thumb and index finger.
When this nerve gets pinched by a disc or joint problem, the symptoms are very different from tennis elbow.
β£οΈPain is not in one spot β it spreads from the neck to the arm, sometimes all the way to the thumb and index finger.
β£οΈIt often feels numb, tingling, electric, or weak, rather than just sore.
β£οΈSymptoms change with neck movement β looking up, turning, or holding your head down too long can make it worse.
