A lateral lisp happens when the sides of the tongue don’t raise and causes air to escape around the sides of the tongue.

What does a lateral lisp sound like?
🌟 a ‘wet’, ‘slushy’ or ‘spitty’ quality
🌟 commonly affected sounds: s or z
🌟 Sid the Sloth from Ice Age is an example of this lisp.

An interdental lisp happens when a child sticks their tongue between their teeth when saying /s/ or /z/ sounds.

This makes the sound come out similar to the /th/ sound. It’s common in younger children, but if it continues past age 4.5, it is recommended to receive support from a speech pathologist.

Some examples of interdental lisp include:
🌟 sun ➡️ sounds like “thun”
🌟 zip ➡️ sounds like “thip”
🌟 sock ➡️ sounds like “thock”
