Recently our podiatrist Ming attended a symposium all about flat feet 👣 and came back with some great insights to help us support our patients even better.

Here’s what Ming learned:

-Not all flat feet are the same. There’s a big difference between flexible and rigid flat feet. A simple heel-raise test can show whether the arch reforms (flexible) or stays flat (rigid) 🦶

-Key ligaments matter. The spring ligament, deltoid ligament, and the long and short plantar ligaments all help keep the arch stable 🏗️

-Flat feet are 3D. Assessing the longitudinal arch, hindfoot position and forefoot alignment gives a full picture of how the foot functions 🔍

-Tight calves? A slant board is a great tool for gentle, passive calf stretching, especially for patients with limited ankle movement 🧘‍♂️

-Fun fact: there have been many different historical definitions of general joint hypermobility 🤓

We love staying up to date with the latest research because flat feet are something we see every day in the clinic. Constant learning helps us give our patients the best care possible 💙

💬 “Do podiatrists treat shin splints?”
Yep, we do! 👣

Shin splints can develop from overuse, poor footwear, or issues like flat feet or tight calves. They cause that dull ache or sharp pain along the front or inside of the shin especially during or after exercise.

A podiatrist can assess your foot mechanics, identify the root cause and help you recover with options including orthotics, footwear advice, activity modification, soft tissue therapy and targeted rehab exercises.

🦶 Surprising Fact: Athlete’s Foot Isn’t Always Itchy

While itching is one of the hallmark symptoms of athlete’s foot, it’s not always present. Some people may feel a burning sensation or even no discomfort at all. That’s why it’s important to regularly inspect your feet for changes you might otherwise miss.

👀 Is It Athlete’s Foot? Signs and Symptoms to Watch For

Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) can look different from person to person, but common signs include:
-Redness and scaling: The skin may appear dry, red, and flaky.
-Cracked or peeling skin: Often seen between the toes or on the soles.
-Blisters: Small, fluid-filled blisters can form.
-Dryness: The foot may be unusually dry, especially on the sides or soles.
-Discolouration: Affected areas may look white, soggy, or grayish—particularly between the toes.
-Odour: A noticeable, unpleasant smell may accompany other symptoms.

Other conditions that can look similar include eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, plantar pustulosis, and plantar keratoderma—so getting the right diagnosis is key.

👉 If you notice any of these symptoms, see your podiatrist. They can confirm the cause and recommend the most effective treatment to keep your feet healthy and comfortable.
