No flashing lights, just a demo of how we’re tackling autumn hoof care 🙌🏽

Little holes are best addressed with early intervention. It may feel a bit fiddly but stopping the spread can save a whole lotta heartache later. This little black hole was very narrow but it was beginning to get a little bit deep.

Our recommended steps:
1. Throughly remove debris from hoof (hoof pick and wore brush are your besties 👌🏽)
2. Use shoeing nail to remove all debris and gunk from holes prior to packing 🦠
3. Flush all crevices with Foot Sure for a thorough cleanse
4. Pack with EquiFibre using shoeing nail.
5. (Not shown here) finish off with a little swipe of EquiMud wherever required (collateral grooves, any minor separation or shallow crevices)

We love Valmont Farms, sharing science backed hoof care insights and stocking The Equid Apothecary 🤎

Did you know the circumflex artery runs right along the bottom edge of the coffin bone — and sole depth is what stands between it and the ground? When sole depth is thin (under ~15mm), that artery is vulnerable to bruising, pressure, and pain with every step. Prioritising sole depth isn’t just a hoof care goal — it’s protecting one of the most important blood supplies in your horse’s foot. 🐴 beware of trimming a compromised foot to make it look fancy from above - replacing what gets taken away to protect the sole depth is key to the horse’s comfort. 👌

(as an aside note to the wedge, when an old horse tells you how he likes his hoof care, you do that! It doesn’t matter if you believe pedal bones should be flat and heels low - which I do not - but the horse’s comfort and ability to move sound and happy is #1). Not all ideals are equal in rehab. If you try and argue against what a horse proves is more or less comfortable for him then you maybe need to meet more horses ❤️🦄
