A mosquito bite is usually just an itchy nuisance but sometimes, it can be much more.

For 91-year-old Peninsula Health patient Karl, what appeared to be a harmless bite turned into something far more serious.

Karl is now undergoing treatment for his fourth Buruli ulcer – a rare and aggressive flesh-eating bacterial infection that can cause significant tissue damage if left untreated and is thought to be spread by mosquitoes.

Dr Peter Kelley, an Infectious Diseases Specialist at Peninsula Health, says it is important to treat any cuts or scratches you get whilst gardening.

“Cleaning any new abrasions with soap and water, treating them with antiseptic and covering them is important.”

While Karl is on the mend now, he is using his experience to urge others to wear long, loose clothing and apply mosquito repellent before heading out doors.

If you have a cut or scratch you are unsure about, or one that is worsening, please visit your GP or Urgent Care Centre for a consultation.

Cake decorator Tigga Mac – Tegan McCormack - will spend Christmas with family and friends after a huge year of chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer at Peninsula Health.

“I didn’t realise how much it was going to take a toll on me—or that with the drug I was on, I was pretty much guaranteed to lose my hair,” explains Tegan.

You can support local cancer services this Christmas and help provide comfort and joy for people undergoing cancer treatment through our Christmas Appeal.

Peninsula Health was recently acknowledged at a state-wide forum for our work in reducing the amount of time our patients spend in hospital. The team has achieved an impressive 13% reduction in inpatient length of stay — surpassing our target of 10%. That equates to more than 16 hours or 2 whole nursing shifts.

It's fantastic to see such a great example of our staff working together to make a difference in the lives of the local community.
