Bunuru 'Season of the Adolescence' is fast approaching. This Noongar season (February–March), is a hot, dry time in Western Australia marked by the flowering of white gums like Marri and Jarrah. As the landscape dries, these trees become vital food sources, drawing in flocks of Black Cockatoos, particularly Ngolyenoks (Carnaby’s black cockatoos) and Karaks (Forest Red-tailed black cockatoos).
During Bunuru, black cockatoos are often seen across the Perth Hills, coastal regions, and suburban areas, feeding on nectar and seeds from Marri, Banksia and Jarrah trees. Research has shown that Ngolyenoks can even successfully raise chicks through the intense heat of a Bunuru summer, with some fledging as late as March — a powerful sign of their resilience. At the same time, these birds face mounting pressure from habitat loss and the ongoing shortage of nesting hollows, despite conservation efforts like artificial cockatubes.
Consider taking a simple action today to protect 13.55 hectares of Endangered Banksia Woodland and Critically Endangered Tuart Woodland in Hamersley. Email the Commonwealth EPBC and ask them to REJECT a proposal to clear this important patch along the Swan Coastal Plain... important habitat for Endangered Black Cockatoos and other wildlife that rely on this corridor for food, shelter, and safe movement.
