He did it!! 🎉🎉🎉

Today we did a trial run on an actual skateboard on the cycle path and Andy absolutely crushed it. 💪 He surprised us all and himself by being able to balance on the skateboard, propel himself with his hiking pole and steer to stay on the left side of the path! 🤯 He needed help stabilising the board to get on safely and we had the Gait Belt on (with safety loops to grab) just in case he was to fall or lose his balance. We also had to do a fair bit of prep work including some release on the grass as his calf and quads were quite tired from the pool yesterday. 💪
So excited to see Andy progress with his skating goal! 🎉🙌🛹

What is Dystonia?

Dystonia happens when the brain sends the wrong messages to your muscles, causing them to contract or twist involuntarily. It can affect any part of the body; most often the neck, face, or hands.

It’s not weakness, stress, or “just tension.” It’s a neurological movement disorder that changes how your brain communicates with your body.

🇦🇺 In Australia, cervical dystonia (affecting the neck) is the most common type seen in clinics. Research here shows many people live for years before getting a diagnosis, partly because symptoms vary and can mimic other conditions.

There’s currently no single cure, but treatment is about retraining communication between the brain and the muscles. That’s where neurological physiotherapy can help!

At The Brain Physio, we focus on:
• Re-educating movement patterns and improving motor control
• Using sensory feedback and relaxation strategies to calm overactive signals
• Helping you manage fatigue and postural discomfort

The goal is to teach your brain to send clearer messages so your body can move more freely.

This client decided that they really want to return to skateboarding. This week he purchased a skate deck, stuck carpet on the top for grip and 2 inner tubes for bag trolley tyres to start to practice the balance for skating. This shows how motivated he is with this goal. 💪 This was a combined effort and I am so proud of him here learning to balance on the skateboard again in a safe way. Look out here he comes! 🎉🎉

Physio focus for this goal:

🛹 Dynamic calf mobility on incline board while maintaining heel contact and a neutral mid foot position and knee control (including right single leg squats on board)
🛹 Single leg squat balance practice on right leg on flat ground
🛹 Maintaining control through right knee and flat foot contact while stepping left foot on and off to propel
🛹 Practising quick steps to save self if loses balance

For home exercise program he is able to do this independently using a hiking pole on his left hand when stepping on and off the board. 🙌😁

FREE 90-MINUTE WEBINAR 🧠

Use of the Bobath Concept as a post-stroke intervention is becoming increasingly controversial.

Anyone who's worked in neuro rehab for any length of time knows that "every person is different" and that "what works for one person may not be the best option for the next person". So how do we decide which modalities and interventions should be retained and which should be de-implemented?

Truly evidence-based practice relies on integrating information about client circumstances and preferences, the intervention context, available research, and clinical expertise. The key to sifting and balancing data from all these sources is clinical reasoning.

Presented by experienced neuro therapists, Monique Davies and Kathy Kuipers, this FREE webinar offers a strategy for applying clinical reasoning to intervention choice - in this case, the Bobath Concept - to ensure the implementation of evidence-based practice. A review of the available research, and a case study are included.

Stroke doesn’t always shout. Sometimes it whispers. 🧠

It might be a crooked smile.
A heavy arm.
A few jumbled words.
And suddenly, everything’s on the line.

This National Stroke Week (Aug 4–10), we’re helping you learn the signs that could save a life using the F.A.S.T. test.

👉 F = Face
Ask them to smile. Is one side drooping?

🙋 A = Arms
Can they lift both arms? Or does one drift down or feel weak?

🗣️ S = Speech
Is their speech slurred, slow or hard to understand?

⏱️ T = Time
If you notice any of these signs, call 000 immediately. Time = brain. Every minute counts.

At The Brain Physio, we see the impact stroke has on people’s lives every day, especially when treatment is delayed. Acting fast increases survival and leads to better recovery. It’s that simple.

The first weeks post-stroke are a critical window for the brain to start rewiring itself. Early neurological physiotherapy taps into this window, helping to retrain movement, prevent long-term disability, and give people the best chance at regaining function.

But even if you’ve missed that early window, progress is still possible. With targeted neuro rehab, the brain can continue to adapt and build new pathways over time.

At The Brain Physio, we support stroke survivors at every stage, whether you’re fresh out of hospital or years into recovery.
