At Northern Beaches Respiratory and Sleep we love lungs!
Did you know that people have an average of 480 million alveoli (tiny air sacs) in their lungs. They are just one cell thick - allowing the passage of oxygen from the air sack into the blood stream. If you spread out all your alveoli they would cover a surface area of about 100 square metres. Roughly the size of half a tennis court. 😳

‘Tis the cough and cold season.
There are many viruses that circulate at this time of the year - rhinovirus, metapneumovirus, adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza, influenza, Covid-19. There are vaccines for influenza, Covid and RSV.

A respiratory and sleep physician who is passionate about delivering top quality patient care, combined with a friendly personable demeanour. She is also a highly regarded medical educator, being head of the Macquarie University clinical school at Northern Beaches Hospital.

Profiling one of our doctors - Dr Kate Barclay. Known for her caring personality and professionalism, Dr Barclay has worked on the Northern Beaches for over 15 years. She manages all adult respiratory conditions, and has particular interests in interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, airways disease and chronic lung infections such as tuberculosis and NTM.
