We all have things in our workplace (and at home) that we need… but we never want to actually use, for example...
First aid training - you hope you never have to do CPR, stop bleeding, or treat a serious burn. But if that moment comes, you don’t want to be “googling it.” You want muscle memory.
Defibrillator (AED) - you hope it never comes off the wall for a real emergency. But if someone collapses in cardiac arrest, an AED can be the difference between life and death in those first critical minutes.
Fire extinguishers - they sit on the wall for years, collecting dust. Until the day a toaster, power board, or kitchen fire turns into seconds that matter.
Paper maps - old school, right? But when you’ve got no reception, a flat phone, or a disaster event knocking out networks, a paper map can be the difference between “lost” and “home.”
First aid kits - most people only open them for a Band-Aid… until it’s a deep cut, a snake bite, a nasty fall, or a child who’s swallowed something they shouldn’t.
Emergency meeting location (assembly point) - you never want a real evacuation, but if it happens, this is what stops confusion. It’s how you make sure everyone gets out, and everyone is accounted for.
Smoke alarms - annoying when they beep… life-saving when they don’t.
Emergency contact lists - boring to update… critical when panic hits.
Backup phone charger / power bank… useless until it isn’t.
Evacuation plans … ignored until there’s actual smoke.
Here’s the truth: preparedness feels pointless, right up until it matters.
So if it’s been a while since you refreshed your first aid skills, checked your kit, located your AED, or found your assembly point… maybe today’s the day.
