🌟 What to do if you’re not happy with your Support Coordinator 🌟

Sometimes, the fit just isn’t right — and that’s okay. A Support Coordinator should be someone who understands you, communicates openly, and helps you get the best out of your NDIS plan.

âś… Step 1: Talk it through
Before making any decisions, have an open conversation with your Support Coordinator. Share your concerns and what you feel is missing. Often, clear communication can reset expectations and get things back on track.

âś… Step 2: Reach out to your current supports
If things still don’t feel right, speak with your other support team members (support workers, OT, Speech Therapist, Psychologist, etc). They often know and can recommend Support Coordinators who may be a better fit.

âś… Step 3: Find the right match
Remember, this is your plan and your journey. You have the right to choose someone who makes you feel supported and empowered.

✨ The relationship with your Support Coordinator should be built on trust, communication, and collaboration. Don’t settle for less than what you need.

✨ Why I Do What I Do ✨

One of the biggest reasons I chose to work in the disability sector is my Dad.

When I was 21, my Dad had a major stroke at just 54 years old. In that moment, my world changed — and so did my understanding of how vital the right supports are. I witnessed firsthand the importance of:
đź’ś High-quality support
đź’ś The role of both formal and informal networks
đź’ś The incredible impact allied health professionals have in building capacity and independence

Living through that experience gave me more than knowledge — it gave me empathy. It helped me see the difference that compassionate, coordinated care can make, not just for the person living with disability, but also for their family.

I truly believe it’s my Dad’s legacy that inspired me to step into this work. Through my role as a Support Coordinator, I carry his story with me every day, striving to make a difference in the lives of others, just as I wished for him.

💫 For me, this work isn’t just a job — it’s personal.

🌟 Client Feedback Highlight 🌟

I recently received this beautiful review that I’m so grateful for:

“Tahnee supported one of our clients and did an outstanding job. She acted swiftly and sensitively on a complex safeguarding concern, coordinated with the right agencies, and handled family dynamics with care. She set clear expectations, stayed patient throughout, and supported us with stream-lining our processes. She shows genuine care, gives quality time, and really understood our client. She is kind, reliable, encouraging, and very easy to work with. I highly recommend Tahnee for Support Coordination.”

One of the most important (and challenging) parts of Support Coordination is being able to step in when things get complex — particularly when there are safeguarding concerns. In this situation, I worked closely with the Adult Safeguarding Unit, multiple providers, and the family to make sure our client felt safe, supported, and heard.

Safeguarding requires:
âś… swift but sensitive action
âś… clear communication with all parties
âś… patience and compassion for family dynamics
✅ always keeping the participant’s wellbeing at the centre

I’m proud of the outcome we achieved together and the trust built along the way.

đź’ś Supporting people through difficult situations is where strong systems, collaboration, and genuine care really matter.

✨ The Power of Multidisciplinary Meetings ✨

One of the most important ways we can support participants in the NDIS is by coming together as a team. Multidisciplinary meetings bring the participant, their supports, and a range of professionals around the same table (literally or virtually).

These meetings are powerful because they:
✔️ Ensure everyone is consistent in the way they provide support
✔️ Provide space to brainstorm ideas and explore different approaches
✔️ Help to identify challenges and barriers from multiple perspectives
✔️ Create a shared understanding of the participant’s goals and needs
✔️ Allow us to celebrate progress as a team, not just as individuals
✔️ Make sure the participant’s voice and choice remain central

When we collaborate, we don’t just share knowledge – we create solutions, empower the participant, and strengthen the support network around them. 💙

NDIS is at its best when everyone works together.

✨ Empowering Choice in the NDIS ✨

How amazing is it to listen to a participant’s goal and then take steps to make that goal happen? Even when there are some risks involved, supporting someone to follow their dreams is one of the most rewarding parts of this work.

This is where the concept of “dignity of risk” comes in. It means recognising that every individual has the right to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from their own experiences – just like anyone else. Protecting someone from every possible risk can actually limit their growth, independence, and sense of self.

Of course, this doesn’t mean ignoring safety. We must always follow our duty of care, complete risk assessments, and step in when a situation poses genuine harm to the participant or others. But when the risk is manageable, supporting choice is what empowers participants to build confidence and lead the life they want.

At the end of the day, participants are their own leaders. We’re simply there to walk alongside them. 💙

🌟 Professional Partnerships That Make a Difference 🌟

I feel so grateful to receive this beautiful review from Donna Cavallaro at Imity Health Services. Donna is a highly skilled and dedicated Occupational Therapist who I have deep respect for.

Her high-quality Functional Capacity Assessments and client-centred approach make such a difference for the participants I support. Collaborating with professionals like Donna means we can achieve the very best outcomes for the people we work alongside. đź’™

Strong partnerships = stronger results for participants.

✨ The Power of Good Systems in Support Coordination ✨

One of the most important parts of being a Support Coordinator is making sure nothing falls through the cracks. Having clear systems and checklists in place means participants are supported every step of the way — from preparing for a plan review, to updating risk assessments, to making sure service agreements are in place.

An organised Support Coordinator = peace of mind for participants and their families. đź’™

This checklist (part of) is just one example of how we keep on top of timelines, goals, and communication, ensuring every participant receives the support they deserve and that their NDIS journey is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Because when it comes to the NDIS, structure and consistency really do make all the difference.

đź’ˇ NDIS Myth-Busting đź’ˇ

One of the most common misconceptions I hear is that if a participant doesn’t use all of their NDIS funding, they won’t get a similar amount next time.

👉 This is completely false.

As a Support Coordinator, I’ve supported participants with roll-over plans and new plans, and I can confidently say this myth is not true. Funding decisions are based on needs, not on how much of a budget was used previously.

The NDIA assesses funding based on a participant’s needs and the evidence provided, not previous spending. If funding in a plan isn’t enough to meet someone’s needs, a participant (or their Support Coordinator) can request a review. For an increase to be approved, the NDIA Delegate needs to see supporting clinical evidence to justify why more funding is required.

✨ Remember: funding is about need, not “use it or lose it.”

đź’› One of the Best Parts of My Job đź’›

There’s nothing quite like seeing people out and about in the community, enjoying everyday activities and connecting with others. While this photo is actually of my Dad, it reminds me of the joy I get seeing my clients confidently access their community—whether it’s going to the shops, joining a class, or attending social events.

The NDIS is all about supporting people to live an ordinary life, and a big part of that is community engagement—being able to participate, contribute, and feel included.

Every small step in independence is a big win! ✨

🌟 Professional Collaboration Spotlight 🌟

I recently received this thoughtful review from Dr. David Unsworth, Clinical Psychologist (PhD) at Psychology Rehabilitation Services.

I have such mutual respect for Dr. Unsworth — he is truly one of the best psychologists I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside. His depth of knowledge, clinical expertise, and person-centred approach make him an outstanding professional within the NDIS space.

If you are looking for a psychologist who specialises in ABI, TBI or persistent concussion symptoms, Dr. Unsworth is definitely worth exploring. His commitment to participant wellbeing is second to none.

It’s collaborations like these that really highlight the importance of working together with trusted providers to achieve the best outcomes for participants.

Thank you, Dr. Unsworth, for your kind words and for the incredible work you do for the people we support. 🙏💜

🤝 Collaboration is key in the NDIS space

As Support Coordinators, one of the most important parts of our role is working closely with all stakeholders involved in a participant’s journey. This can include therapists, providers, schools, medical professionals, and of course—family and support networks.

By building strong collaborative relationships, we ensure:
✨ Everyone is on the same page
✨ Supports are coordinated and not duplicated
✨ The participant’s goals remain the focus
✨ Better outcomes and a smoother NDIS experience

At the end of the day, it takes a team approach to support a participant to live their best life. đź’ś

✨ Why checks on independent support workers matter ✨

As an NDIS Support Coordinator, one of my key responsibilities is making sure participants are connected with safe, reliable, and skilled providers. When it comes to working with independent unregistered support workers, it’s especially important to do a few extra checks to protect participants and ensure quality supports.

Some of the checks I complete include:
âś… Valid insurances (public liability, professional indemnity)
âś… National Police Checks
âś… NDIS Worker Screening / WWCC
âś… Up-to-date qualifications and certifications (CPR, First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, etc.)

🔎 I always request to see paper copies of documents and certificates, not just verbal confirmation, so I can be confident everything is current and legitimate.

💡 It’s also really valuable to know exactly what qualifications and training a worker has — this keeps the participant well informed and helps match the right supports to their needs.

✔️ Doing the groundwork upfront makes a huge difference in creating safe, sustainable, and positive support arrangements.
