As Term 1 wraps up, we want you to take a moment to look back at how far you've come.

It’s something we don’t do very often.

Most people are focused on what’s next. What still needs to be fixed, improved or changed. Especially when you’re in recovery or trying to rebuild parts of your life, it can feel like there’s always something else to work on.

But every now and then, especially at the end of term, it’s worth stopping and looking back.

Looking back to the person you were when you first made the decision to get help.

When things felt uncertain, or uncomfortable, or even just unfamiliar. For some, that’s the moment they walked through the doors at The Power In You Project. For others, it might be a point where they decided something needed to change.

That version of you matters, and so does everything that’s happened since.

Because progress doesn’t always feel obvious when you’re in it. It’s not always big or visible. A lot of the time, it’s in the smaller things. Showing up. Having conversations you might have avoided before. Building routine. Starting to think differently. Backing yourself a bit more than you used to.

Over time, those things add up.

One of the things we talk about a lot at PIYP is that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Everyone’s situation is different, and so is the path forward. But something that is consistent across the board is that change takes time, and it takes a willingness to keep going, even when it doesn’t feel like much is happening.

That’s why taking time to reflect is so important.

Not to dwell on the past, but to recognise what’s been built. To acknowledge the effort. To see that there has been movement, even if it hasn’t felt like it day to day.

Because when you can see that, it gives you something solid to keep moving forward from.

There’s still more ahead, there always is.
But don’t overlook what’s already been done 🙌

A reminder that our Norlane Support Group meets every Tuesday morning at 10am at The Aviary Cafe on Robin Avenue ☕

It’s a relaxed space to connect, have a chat and spend time with others working through life’s challenges in a supportive environment.

Last week over a coffee, we discussed the power of affirmations and created fridge magnets with our own personal reminders.

Anyone is welcome to come along! If you’d like more information about our Norlane support groups, please don't hesitate to reach out to our team.

𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞 𝗧𝗘𝗡: 𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 & 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

It’s Week 10 already and the final week of Term 1.

This week both our Addiction Support and Mental Health groups will be focusing on reflection and introspection.

Taking time to reflect allows us to look at where we’re at, recognise how far we’ve come and consider what we want to work towards next. It’s easy to move from one thing to the next without stopping to check in, but reflection gives us the chance to reset and redirect if needed.

Introspection is about becoming more aware of our thoughts and feelings. Building this awareness can help us better manage our emotions and mindset, rather than feeling like we’re being controlled by them.

Our Women’s Group will be exploring wellbeing and the pursuit of happiness. It’s common to fall into routine and forget what actually brings us a sense of enjoyment or fulfilment. This session will look at what that means individually and how we can bring more of it into our lives.

Let’s finish strong 👊

This week in Art Therapy we explored the theme of establishing and maintaining boundaries.

Participants worked with clay to create sculptures that reflected what boundaries look and feel like for them. It’s a different way of thinking about something that can be hard to put into words.

Art Therapy gives people space to slow down, reflect and express what’s going on beneath the surface. It can help build self-awareness, process emotions and create a sense of calm, all important parts of recovery.

We have one more Art Therapy session next Monday afternoon to wrap up the term if anyone would like to come along!

From Lived Experience to Leadership: Designing Employment Pathways That Break the Cycle 🔄

Over the last two days, Kane attended the Future Justice and Corrections Summit at Marvel Stadium, where he was invited to join the stage alongside Pattie Phillips and Amelia Pickering from the Prison Network, and lived experience advocate Puni Teate.

The summit brought together people from across Australia and internationally to discuss what’s working, what needs to change, and how we can improve the way individuals experience time in custody.

Kane spoke as part of a panel focused on 'From Lived Experience to Leadership', sharing insights from both his own journey and the work we do every day at The Power In You Project and Hope Industries.

A big part of the conversation centred around the need for flexible, non-judgemental pathways, allowing people to meet their obligations while gradually building capacity, confidence and stability in employment and life.

Because the reality is, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Understanding the individual, what they’re carrying and what they’re navigating is key to creating lasting change.

"Although there will always be challenges and differences of opinions when it comes to what we believe is best practice, the people in the room were committed to making change so a short term of imprisonment did not become a lifetime of trauma.

I believe prison is absolutely necessary in our country but we could definitely do better with more individualised support whilst incarcerated and investment in preventative and community based diversion programs to stop the ever expanding numbers of people entering the prison system."

- Kane

NDIS Support at The Power In You Project 🩵

Mandy (pictured with Bron and Savannah) is one of many participants who has been supported through PIYP over the past few years.

Alongside our group programs, we also offer one-on-one NDIS support, helping people build independence, confidence and connection in their day-to-day lives.

Our Peer Mentors support clients with things like getting to appointments, shopping, and staying connected to the community. For many, it’s also about having someone in their corner who understands what they’re going through.

All of our Peer Mentors are qualified in Mental Health and/or AOD, and many bring lived experience as well as further study in areas like counselling, criminology and fitness.

NDIS participants can also access our weekly group program, along with additional supports such as meal prep, personal training and psychology services.

If you or someone you know is looking for support, feel free to reach out to learn more.

Recovery starts when you stop staying quiet about what you need.

One of the things we’ve been focusing on this week is assertiveness and courage. For a lot of people, speaking up doesn’t come naturally. It can feel uncomfortable, or even easier to stay quiet and avoid it altogether.

But staying quiet can also keep us stuck.

Learning to say what you need, set boundaries and face things that feel uncomfortable is part of the process. It’s not always easy, but it’s how things start to change.

You don’t have to have it all figured out. Just start with being honest about where you’re at.
