Such a wonderful turnout yesterday at our AMR Seminar for World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week!

The session was filled with insightful presentations, thoughtful discussions, and an inspiring mix of perspectives on antimicrobial resistance. Our speakers brought so much depth and clarity to topics ranging from antimicrobial stewardship and diagnostics to surveillance and innovative approaches to combating AMR.

A huge thank you to our incredible speakers Dr. Kwee Chin (KC) Liew, Dr. Nomvuyo Mothobi, Dr. Sajal Saha, Dr. Ruby Biezen, and Janice Chiang for sharing their expertise, and to everyone who joined us today. Your presence and enthusiasm truly made the event special.

Weโ€™re excited to share this short video with Dr. Sajal Saha from CIIDIR as part of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) seminar this Thursday 20th November 2025.

Antimicrobial resistance affects all of us and understanding how we use antibiotics is one of the simplest ways to protect our health and our community. Join us to explore what AMR is, why it matters, and the small actions we can all take to make a positive difference.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) affects all of us, parents, families, patients, and communities because it changes the way everyday infections can be treated.

This Thursday, weโ€™re bringing together experts to explore the practical steps, new tools, and emerging ideas helping us protect the medicines we rely on.

You donโ€™t need to be a scientist to join the conversation, just curious about the future of health and how we can keep antibiotics working for generations to come.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the biggest global health challenges of our time. When medicines stop working, everyday infections become harder - and sometimes impossible - to treat.

Join us for a seminar bringing together experts in microbiology, infectious diseases, and public health to discuss how we can slow resistance, protect patients, and safeguard our shared future.

๐Ÿงฌ๐Ÿ”ฌ Major breakthrough shows improvement to patient care for severe golden staph infections.

Golden staph can cause life-threatening infections such as sepsis and pneumonia, and the bacteria are known for their ability to adapt quickly, becoming resistant to even the most potent antibiotics.

Our researchers in collaboration with seven major Victorian hospitals, are the first to show that using real-time genome sequencing to track bacterial changes during golden staph infection can give clinicians immediate insights to personalise treatment, prevent further antibiotic resistance and improve patient outcomes.

The event featured a poster session with opportunities for networking and discussion, an interactive quiz to identify viruses and bacteria, and a public lecture by two immunology researchers, Denise Airey from Australian Rickettsial Reference Laboratory and A/Prof. Daniel O'Brien the Director of Infectious Diseases Unit at Barwon Health.

The aim of DOI is to connect what scientists are learning about the immune system with the general public, helping to improve health, well-being, and awareness of science, which is exactly what this event achieved.

For , April 25, we asked some of our malaria researchers, "๐—ช๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐˜„๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ผ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฝ ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฎ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€?".

It's important to encourage all researchers to renew our commitment to ending malaria. We already have the knowledge, effective tools, and targeted approaches for prevention, testing, and treatment that can end this disease. It's essential to reinvest in what works, rethink our strategies to tackle ongoing challenges, and strengthen our collaboration with countries and communities to drive faster progress.

Ending isnโ€™t just about improving health; itโ€™s a crucial step toward creating a equitable, safer, and more prosperous world for all.

Tomorrow is World Malaria Day, April 25.

CIIDIR (Institute for Mental and Physical Health and Clinical Translation and a partnership between Deakin University and Barwon Health) celebrates a publication by Dr Myo Naung.

Dr Myo Naung developed a new computer-based method to study malaria genomes. This approach will help researchers understand the diversity of malaria surface antigens being tested as vaccine candidates, which is crucial for design of more effective malaria vaccines in the future.
