Western Victoria Primary Health Network

Western Victoria Primary Health Network Western Victoria Primary Health Network (PHN) is responsible for increasing the effectiveness, efficiency and coordination of health services for patients.

Western Victoria Primary Health Network (WVPHN) has an important role in facilitating the delivery of best practice primary health care across our region which comprises 21 local government areas and a total population of approximately 618,000 people. Established in July 2015, we are funded largely by the Commonwealth Government to work with the primary care sector to improve health outcomes for our communities. We are one of 31 Primary Health Networks in Australia and one of six in Victoria, and we are a member of the Victorian and Tasmanian PHN Alliance

We are a not-for-profit, membership-based organisation. Our core function is to use our knowledge and understanding of local health and health care needs to:

- Support general practice (including Aboriginal medical services)
- Commission or purchase locally-needed services
- Integrate local services and systems. We achieve these goals by working collaboratively with health services, health providers and community organisations and individuals, to identify priority health issues and develop region-wide as well as localised programs and projects that directly respond to health care needs. Thunderstorm asthma is nothing to just sneeze at. It can lead to serious health concerns.

Higher grass pollen counts combined with a particular type of uncommon thunderstorm, can increase the chances of people being impacted by thunderstorm asthma between October and December. Those most at risk are people with current or past asthma and people with undiagnosed asthma while those prone to springtime hay fever could be also vulnerable.

Health professionals and the community are urged to have plans in place so you know what to do to when there is a high risk of epidemic thunderstorm asthma forecast.

Go to our Thunderstorm Asthma web page for more information on how to prepare. https://westvicphn.com.au/health-professionals/health-topics/emergency-and-disaster-management/thunderstorm-asthma/

A new measles case has been reported in the Geelong region in an adult who likely acquired their infection overseas after travel to India, Indonesia and Vietnam.

There is an ongoing risk of measles in returning travellers from overseas or interstate.

Anyone who has visited a listed exposure site during the dates and times specified should monitor for symptoms of measles. Symptoms can include fever, cough, runny nose, sore or red eyes, followed by a red rash.

πŸ“ Find the most up to date listed exposure sites here: https://www.health.vic.gov.au/health-alerts/measles-public-exposure-sites-victoria
