Our osteo word of the month is ‘Gastrocnemius’ (pronounced gas-troc-nee-me-us). The gastroc (for short) is a powerful muscle found in the back of our leg, or calf region. This muscle crosses both the knee and the ankle joint, and so plays an important role in moving both joints. The gastroc is joined by two other muscles in the calf called the ‘soleus’ and ‘plantaris’. These muscles literally put a spring in our step, driving our bodies forward when we walk or run.
