Wow what a story to tell!
A women’s strength will always continue to amaze me! 💖

Dana had NO IDEA she was 41 weeks pregnant!

The Australian flew long haul to Florida, did all the rides and was stuck in her hotel room when the hurricane hit.

She felt a bit bloated (😳🤯) so took some laxatives - then, DURING A BLACK OUT, she gave birth BY HERSELF in the hotel bathroom!

In the morning, when her partner woke up, she goes, "Good morning. Surprise! You're a dad!"

Like seriously blokes can you even imagine!?

You go to bed, oblivious, and when you wake up - THERE'S A BABY!!! An actual BABYYY!!

I tell you, women are magical, unicorn creatures.

Now, after this amazing woman has performed this phenomenal feat, the ambos cart her down the steps in a stretcher as if she'd suddenly lost the use of her legs. And in the hospital, they manage to get her into one of the institutional gowns. It might just be my independent streak, but geez, they sure know how to push that "No no, you're helpless & dependent, you NEED us!" thing, it seems like to me.

I mean this woman is a freaking AMAZON! She thought she just had WIND!! and ends up having an unexpected baby & unplanned freebirth - all by herself! In a blackout!! In a hurricane!! While hubby is snoring blissfully in the other room!

That's a wilder ride than the freakiest roller-coaster!

And now, after all that, they've got to jump through hoops & red tape to get their baby home to Australia.

What a story!

They'll be dining out on this for years to come.

A newborn’s scull ✨ “Soft Spots” ✨

Although the skull appears to be 1 large bone, there are actually several major bones that are connected together. The major bones that compose the skull are 2 frontal bones, 2 parietal bones & 1 occipital bone.
A newborn baby’s skull is made up of sections of bone, known as plates, that cover the brain & are joined together by fibrous joints called sutures. The sutures function as seams, & they are very much necessary to facilitate the movement, molding & giving some flexibility to allow your baby’s head to narrow slightly as it travels through the birth canal. They also allow for rapid postnatal growth & development of the brain in the first years of life. However, the bones that shape the cranium begin unfused, leaving several gaps between the individual bones of the infant’s skull. These gaps are composed of membranous connective tissue & are known as fontanelles. Fontanelles, often referred to as “soft spots,” & is a special feature that is important for the normal growth & development of your baby’s brain & skull. Six fontanelles are present during infancy, with the most notable being the anterior at the top of your baby’s head & posterior located at the back of your baby’s head. The posterior fontanelle usually closes by the time your baby is about 2 months old. The anterior fontanelle can close any time between 4 & 26 months of age. The anterior fontanelle tends to close earlier in male than in female children. Your baby’s fontanelle should feel soft & flat. If you softly touch a fontanelle, you may at times feel a slight pulsation due to blood flow in the blood vessels around the brain, this is normal. If you notice that your baby’s fontanelles are low or sunken, your baby may be dehydrated. A bulging or swollen fontanelle may indicate rare but serious conditions such as meningitis or encephalitis (infections in the brain), cerebral haemorrhage (bleeding in the brain), hydrocephalus, an abscess or another cause of increased pressure in the brain. If your baby’s fontanelle changes, or feels different to how it usually does, show your doctor or midwife.

“The energy that gets your baby in is the energy that gets your baby out”.

~ Ina May Gaskin

Your partners role in labour is so very important! Why? As a birth partner you can help to influence the hormonal cascade that happens in a woman’s body during labour, particularly in regards to the love hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin is released during sexual activity, birth, and breastfeeding, and is the hormone that causes the uterus to contract during labour. Levels of oxytocin gradually increase throughout labour, and are highest around the time of birth, when it contributes to the wonderful, ecstatic feeling women often describe after a physiological or natural birth. Oxytocin is nicknamed the love hormone, because it is produced when we feel love and connection. Hugging, kissing, massage or even just being close to your partner can all help a woman to release oxytocin in labour. So the more your birth partner can connect with you, be close to you, touch you, give you positive affirmations and show you love and affection during labour will all be beneficial in how you feel and affect how you progress in labour 💖 So partners please don’t hesitate, get involved! Your presence is helping 💖

Lotus Birth 🪷

Lotus birth gives your baby a slow, gentle & less invasive transition earthside by leaving the placenta attached to the baby with no cutting, clamping or tying of the umbilical cord. The cord is left it to dry out & detach from baby’s naval naturally, in its own time, which generally takes 7-10 days to fall off by itself. The incredible & amazing organ, the placenta, is what sustained baby for 9-10 months in the womb with its connection via the umbilical cord to your baby, how beautiful is it allowing the time and respect for them to decide when to detach & let go 💖

Lotus born baby’s receive the full amount of cord blood that is present at birth. Measuring 1/3 of baby’s total blood supply this cord blood, which is actually the store of blood from the baby’s placenta is rich & unique, containing blood cells, iron, oxygen, hormones & enzymes. This blood is needed to give the baby’s vital organs the full amount of placental blood needed for optimum postnatal health. When baby receives full placental transfusion the liver, kidneys, heart, gut, skin, digestive system & brain will be replete with this life-giving blood and will function fully, as nature intended. With the cord still attached to the placenta the immature liver and kidneys are supported in eliminating waste from the baby’s body immediately after birth allowing for the off loading of the stress hormones cortisol & adrenaline.

***To preserve the placenta you can wrap in a cloth or fabric and cover with sea salt & herbs. The most common herbs used are lavender, rosemary, Thyme, Rose & Calendula Flowers. ***

Newborn checks done skin to skin 🩺

Performing newborn checks should be done skin to skin (unless a medical emergency is required for mother or baby) & is now a much more common practice in many healthcare settings. It allows for better bonding between the newborn and the parent, promotes breastfeeding initiation, improves developmental, physiological and psychological outcomes and helps maintain the baby’s body temperature. Evidence demonstrates that newborns who receive skin to skin care frequently experience improved weight gain, reduced risk of infection, and greater haemodynamic stability, including thermoregulation and blood sugar stability. Parents and baby both experience an increase in oxytocin release during skin to skin care, leading to decreased stress and the promotion of bonding. Additionally, it facilitates early detection of any potential health issues while providing a comforting environment for the baby.
