📣 A Message for Support Workers in the Disability Sector
This might be hard to hear — but it’s real.
If your client is showing distress, using confronting language, or behaving in a way that triggers you — that doesn’t mean they’re “the problem.”
It means something needs support. And as a support worker, that’s your job.
You don’t just walk away.
You don’t just say, “I can’t deal.”
You don’t just stop showing up.
If something’s not working — action it.
📌 Follow the right pathways
📌 Raise it respectfully with the client
📌 Talk to their care team
📌 Reflect on the care plan
📌 Consider: Have I created a safe space?
This work is not about what you can put up with.
It’s not about whether you “vibe” with someone.
It’s about being professional, trauma-informed, and emotionally responsible in the disability sector — especially in the psychosocial space.
You are not being paid to just “hang out,” drink coffee, or go to the mall.
You are being trusted to hold space in someone’s life.
To walk beside them. To support their growth, even when it’s messy or uncomfortable.
If you’re not coping with the weight of the role — that’s okay.
But don’t disappear. Don’t ghost. Don’t blame the person you’re supposed to be helping.
Work out a plan. Communicate. Do it properly.
That’s what ethical, capable, trauma-informed workers do.
Because this isn’t just a job.
It’s community care.
It’s responsibility.
It’s holding someone’s story — gently, respectfully, and with intention.
