Psychosocial hazards in the workplace aren’t always visible, but the impact is real.

High workloads, poor communication, lack of role clarity, workplace conflict and low support can all affect psychological safety and wellbeing.

Creating a mentally healthy workplace isn’t just good culture it’s a responsibility.

When we proactively identify and manage psychosocial hazards, we protect our people, strengthen our teams and build more sustainable businesses.

If you’re unsure where to start, start with the conversation.

Last week I had the privilege of delivering a Mental Health First Aid course on Bribie Island with an incredible group of participants.

(I didn’t get a photo… so here we are using a little AI to bring the moment to life 😉)

I’m so grateful to each of the participants for taking two days out of their busy lives to build their knowledge, gain new insight, develop practical skills and most importantly, build real confidence in recognising and supporting someone experiencing a mental health challenge.

Over the two days, we had open conversations, shared experiences and created a safe space for learning and growth.

Mental health challenges affect every family, every workplace and every community.

When more people feel equipped with the knowledge and confidence to step in early, we create safer, more supportive environments for everyone.

It was wonderful to receive feedback such as:

“Olivia was a fantastic and practical trainer. I can highly recommend her.”

and

“Olivia Walford was an excellent instructor, facilitating the course in a very professional manner.”

Thank you again to this amazing group for your openness, engagement, and willingness to learn skills that truly can save lives.

If you or your workplace or organisation would like to host a Mental Health First Aid course, I would love to bring this training to more people in our community.

Did you know that su***de is the leading cause of death for young men aged 15–24 in Australia?
And that around 9 Australians die by su***de every single day?

Behind every statistic is a person; the ripple effects of su***de are long-lasting, impacting families, friends, workplaces and entire communities.

Many people who are struggling don’t ask for help directly.

They may show warning signs — changes in behaviour, withdrawal, hopelessness or talking about feeling like a burden.

Would you recognise the signs?
Would you know how to start the conversation?
Would you know how to support someone who may be thinking about su***de?

This is what Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training is designed for.

I’m delivering a face-to-face MHFA course on Bribie Island (3–4 February).

The course equips everyday people with the skills and confidence to recognise risk, respond safely and connect people to support.

You don’t need to be a professional, just someone who cares.

What is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)?
Great question — and I’m glad you asked 💬

MHFA is a lot like a traditional first aid course… but instead of learning how to respond to a physical injury, you learn practical, real-world ways to support someone who may be struggling with their mental health.

Over the two days, you’ll learn how to:
• Recognise early warning signs of common mental health challenges like anxiety, depression, PTSD and substance use
• Have confident, supportive conversations when someone isn’t coping
• Respond to crisis situations, including panic attacks, suicidal thoughts, or self-harm behaviours
• Know what to say, what not to say, and how to encourage professional support
• Look after your own wellbeing and boundaries while supporting others

This course is for everyday people — parents, carers, teachers, community members, volunteers, workplaces… anyone who wants to feel more confident and less helpless when someone they care about is doing it tough.

You don’t need any prior experience — just a willingness to learn and support others 💚

Psychosocial hazards are no longer a “nice to talk about” -they’re a legal responsibility for workplaces.

Workload, role clarity, job demands, change and workplace relationships all impact psychological safety at work.

The good news? There are practical, evidence-based ways to reduce risk and better support your team.

We work alongside organisations to deliver tailored, evidence-based workshops that help identify psychosocial hazards, meet legal obligations and most importantly, support the wellbeing of your people in meaningful, practical ways.

If you’re looking for proactive, compliant and people-focused ways to support your team, let’s start the conversation.

💚 It was a pleasure delivering today’s workshop with the wonderful team at Yarwun State School

Together, we explored overwhelm what it looks like, how it shows up in our bodies and minds and practical strategies to recognise and respond to it.

We focused on both individual tools and workplace approaches, because managing stress isn’t just a personal responsibility — it’s a team effort.

These sessions are a powerful way to invest in personal and professional development, giving teachers practical tools to recognise stress early, build coping strategies and support one another in a demanding role.

Thank you for the open conversations, engagement and commitment to wellbeing, it was great to see such a supportive and proactive school culture in action.
