Alot of people think massage is just about ârelaxingâ â but there are some very real, physical changes happening in your body while youâre on the table.
First, your nervous system.
Most of us spend the day in a low-level stress state (even if we donât realise it). When you lie down and treatment starts, your body begins shifting from that âfight or flightâ mode into ârest and digest.â
That shift matters.
Itâs what allows your heart rate to slow, your breathing to regulate, and your muscles to actually let go instead of constantly bracing.
Then thereâs your muscles and soft tissue.
When pressure is applied, a few things are happening at once:
⢠Blood flow to the area increases
⢠Tissue temperature rises slightly
⢠Muscle fibres start to lengthen and relax
If youâve had tight shoulders or a stiff back, those areas are often holding reduced circulation and ongoing tension. Massage helps improve that by encouraging movement in the tissue and bringing fresh oxygen into the area.
Thatâs why things feel looser afterwards â not because something was âfixedâ instantly, but because the tissue is functioning better.
Youâll also often hear people say they feel sore the next day.
That can happen because:
⢠Youâve worked into tight or sensitive areas
⢠Circulation has increased in places that were previously restricted
⢠Your body is adjusting to the change in tension
Itâs usually mild and short-lived, similar to how your body feels after exercise.
There are also changes happening chemically.
Massage has been shown to reduce cortisol (your stress hormone) and support increases in serotonin and dopamine. Thatâs part of why people report better mood, improved sleep, and feeling more settled afterwards.
By the end of a session, most people notice:
⢠Reduced muscle tension
⢠Improved range of movement
⢠A calmer overall state
Not because massage is a quick fix â but because your body has been given the right conditions to reset and regulate.
Massage isnât just about pressure or âhow deepâ it is.
Itâs about working with your body in a way that improves how itâs functioning â both physically and neurologically.
And thatâs why it can make such a noticeable difference, even after one session.
