headspace Gladstone wishes everyone a happy Chinese new year and happy lunar new year! Wishing you prosperity and good fortune in the year ahead.

This year we celebrate The Year of the Fire Horse which only happens once every 60 years!

Something we value within our community is the opportunity to learn from within our own rich cultural fabric.

This week Effy shared with us some cultural insight about the traditional Chinese calendar being guided by both the rhythm of the new moons and the shift of the seasons - making it a lunisolar calendar. That balance is why the Chinese New Year / Spring Festival always lands in late January or February, aligned with renewal and the arrival of spring.

You might be wondering, is it Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year?

Chinese New Year / Spring Festival celebrations follow the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar. It's celebrated in China and by Chinese communities with:

🏮red lanterns symbolising good fortune, joy and prosperity
🧧 lucky red envelopes
🥟 reunion dinners
🐉 lion and dragon dances

The Lunar New Year is a broader term that refers to celebrations of the new year based on lunar or lunisolar calendars, and is celebrated in multiple cultures across Asia.

- In Korea, it's called Seollal
- In Vietnam, it's known as Tết Nguyên Đán or Tết
- In China, it's Chinese New Year / Spring Festival

While they share similarities like family gatherings, honouring their ancestors, festive foods, each celebration has its own unique traditions, foods, and cultural meaning.

While “Lunar New Year” is increasingly used as an inclusive umbrella term in Western contexts, referring to it as Chinese New Year acknowledges its specific cultural and historical origins. Importantly, Chinese New Year is a festival with a strong spirit of inclusivity, and people of all ethnicities and backgrounds are warmly welcomed to celebrate.

Thank you Effy for sharing your knowledge with our team and DiverseCity young people 💚
