🌿 How Acupuncture Supports Digestive Health 🌿

Digestive issues like bloating, IBS, reflux or sluggish digestion are often signs of imbalance within the gut–brain axis — the powerful communication network between your brain, nervous system, and digestive tract.

✨ Modern research shows that acupuncture can help regulate this system in several key ways:

💆‍♀️ Modulates gut motility – Acupuncture can regulate the movement of the digestive tract (gastric peristalsis), either stimulating or calming it depending on what your body needs. This helps restore normal rhythm in conditions like IBS or gastroparesis.

🧠 Regulates the nervous system – Acupuncture influences the autonomic nervous system and activates the vagus nerve, which promotes the “rest and digest” response, improving digestion while reducing stress and anxiety.

🦠 Balances the gut microbiome – Studies show acupuncture can positively affect the composition of gut bacteria and reduce inflammation, supporting a healthier gut environment.

🔥 Reduces inflammation & strengthens the intestinal barrier – By calming inflammatory pathways and protecting the gut lining, acupuncture helps with conditions such as IBD and chronic bloating.

🧩 Affects the brain–gut axis – Acupuncture has been shown to modulate activity in brain regions like the hippocampus and amygdala, which are linked to emotional and visceral sensations — explaining why it benefits stress-related digestive disorders.

💧 Regulates hormone and acid secretion – Through its effects on the autonomic pathways, acupuncture can adjust gastrointestinal hormone levels and even reduce excessive acid production, supporting those with reflux or GERD.

🌸 Conditions that may benefit from acupuncture include:
• Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
• Functional Dyspepsia
• Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
• Gastroparesis
• Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
• Chronic Functional Constipation
• Postoperative Ileus
• Acute Pancreatitis

If you’ve been struggling with ongoing digestive discomfort, acupuncture offers a natural and evidence-based approach to restore balance through both the body and mind.

🌸 Menopause is a natural life transition — not something to “fix,” but to support and balance. 🌸

As hormones shift, you might notice:
🔥 Hot flushes and night sweats
🌙 Poor sleep or fatigue
💭 Mood changes or anxiety
💧 Vaginal dryness
💪 Aches and brain fog

✨ Recent research backs up what Chinese Medicine has long observed — acupuncture can make a real difference.
A recent clinical trial found that women receiving acupuncture had a 36.7% reduction in hot flushes after 6 months, while those who didn’t receive treatment saw little change. The benefits were still noticeable 6 months after treatment ended, and quality of life also improved — including sleep, mood, and energy levels. Research paper available here: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4874921/

🌿 In Chinese Medicine, menopause reflects an imbalance between Yin and Yang — often a decline in Kidney Yin and Essence. Acupuncture and herbs provide support to nourish, cool, and harmonise the body, easing symptoms naturally.

✨ Acupuncture shows promise for children with ADHD! ✨

A new systematic review and meta-analysis (2023, Medicina) analysed 14 studies involving 1,185 children and found that acupuncture — both alone and alongside conventional therapy — improved symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, learning difficulties, and behaviour issues in children with ADHD.

The review also reported no major side effects of acupuncture.

While more high-quality studies are still needed and the risk of bias of studies are rated concerning, these findings highlight the potential of acupuncture as a natural and complementary therapy to support children’s focus, calmness, and learning — especially when used alongside medical and behavioural care.

At Pingpoint Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine, we offer gentle and child-friendly acupuncture (including scalp acupuncture, acuprssure stimulation, moxibustion, cupping, Tuina massage, etc.) to help support children’s attention, emotional balance, and wellbeing naturally.

Full research paper available here: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9965965/ -medicina-59-00392
According to this research paper:
- Compared to conventional medicine alone, the meta-analysis indicated that acupuncture as an add-on to conventional medicine has a positive effect on improving conduct problems, learning problems, hyperactivity–impulsivity, and hyperactivity symptoms in ADHD patients.
- Similarly, acupuncture alone was found to improve learning problems, hyperactivity–impulsivity, and hyperactivity symptoms in ADHD patients and exhibited better total treatment efficacy than conventional medicine alone.
- No major adverse events were reported.
- The risk of bias of the included studies was generally concerning. - Conclusions: Evidence on the effectiveness of acupuncture for ADHD patients is currently too limited to provide recommendations for its usage. More studies with the proper methodology are needed for the validation of acupuncture interventions in treating children with ADHD.
