World Voice Day 16 April 2024

The goal of this year’s campaign is to “Resonate. Educate & Celebrate” the human voice. The Australian Dysphonia Network (ADN) uses this message to bring attention to the human voice across Australia and New Zealand by “illuminating” historic and iconic landmarks across both countries.

The organisation wants to start conversations about voice health, voice loss or voice changes; as well as to symbolise the need for us all to celebrate and value our voice in the same way we value our vision and hearing.

This World Voice Day, iconic landmarks across Australia and New Zealand are glowing red to show support for those who have lost their voice or live with dysphonia.

Why focus on ‘voice’? Because, unlike vision or hearing, our voice is very often taken for granted, we open our mouths to speak and our words come out. Most people will relate to the frustration of having lost their voice at some time, (usually after a big night out or cheering at a football game), but for those with dysphonia, that frustration is a permanent way of life.

Help to spread the word.

April is neurodiversity awareness month
What is Neurodiversity?

“Neurodiversity is a concept that regards individuals with differences in brain function and behavioral traits as part of normal variation in the human population.

The movement of Neurodiversity is about uncovering the strengths of neurodiverse individuals and utilizing their talents to increase innovation and productivity of the society as a whole.” (Stanford Neurodiversity Project, 2024)
“…the concept that neurological differences are recognized and respected as natural variations of human beings rather than deficiencies…Neurodiversity represents the idea that people with neurocognitive variants do not need to be cured; they need to be accommodated to realize their unique talents.”

(jdy13, 2023) citing Stanford Medicine’s Department of Radiology newsletter, for the texas state university HIVE HUB webpage.
stuttering IS caused by differences in neurological functioning. IT is a form of neurodivergence. Stuttering isn’t a deficit; it is just another way of speaking.

Stuttering can be associated with negative social outcomes but stuttering itself doesn’t cause these, rather they result from negative societal stereotypes about stuttering. the way in which we, our clients, society, teachers, and families view stuttering can impact how our clients feel about having a stutter.

it is important we treat each client and family as individuals, with their own goals and aspirations for their speech and communication.

Let's use this month to celebrate the diversity within our communities and workplaces.

💙 Let's strive for greater understanding, acceptance, and inclusion for all individuals,

🌈 Let's create a world where neurodiversity is celebrated!
