Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas made by incomplete ignition or burning of carbon-based fuels like petrol, propane, charcoal, wood and oil. You can't smell it, see it or taste it, but it can pose a real threat to the personal safety of those on board your vessel. Carbon monoxide can accumulate anywhere in and around your vessel in all weather conditions and when the boat is moored, anchored or underway.

When carbon monoxide enters your lungs it reacts with blood haemoglobin and reduces the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. The resulting lack of oxygen leads to tissue damage, long term health problems, permanent brain damage or even death.

Know the risks, learn to spots the signs & symptoms and how to apply effective first aid for carbon monoxide poisoning.
We specialise in marine specific first aid training for maritime professionals.

Fatal sea snake bites are exceptionally rare in Australia.

Even though many species carry some of the most potent venom in the world, deaths from bites are rare. For swimmers, snorkellers, and divers, most encounters are nothing more than a snake showing harmless curiosity.

For trawl fishers, however, the risks are far greater. Sea snakes are can be caught in nets, often highly stressed and defensive by the time they are released.

Despite this, the danger is often underestimated. Many assume sea snakes cannot deliver a serious bite. While venom is injected only about half the time, the belief that their fangs are too short to cause harm is misleading. Some species have fangs as long as a tiger snake’s and can open their jaws a full 180 degrees.

Bites do happen—but many go unreported. This silence makes sea snake bites a hidden occupational hazard, one that can only be reduced through awareness, preparation and high quality training.

At Marine Medical Solutions Australia, we provide specialist sea snake bite first aid training for marine and maritime professionals, ensuring crews know the correct response at the point of injury.
