Diet culture tried to teach me to cut out, shrink, restrict & demonise food ❌

Educating myself over the years & being coached by trained professionals taught me better.. 🥹

Food isn’t meant to earned, scared of, tiny or thought of with a negative mindset
It’s there to fuel you, satisfy you & give you energy for life.

If you’re constantly hungry, always aiming to chase “perfect” meals, or over complicating your food choices… this not a lack of willpower. It’s a lack of adequate nourishment & education around nutrition & your food choices.. 🥑🍓🍔

It all started…

With one decision & wow what a bloody journey, it really goes to show the what you put in you get out.

Was this easy? Hell no, my the reward of being a better version of myself after all these years trumps it being hard, if it wasn’t hard it would not have CHANGED me.

You have to have a different breed of discipline to get through a body building prep, which at the time I believe I had, would I say I had that now? Hell nah, that ain’t for me, but that phase of my life sculpted the path to where I am today.

You’re never gonna get it perfect first go, hell not even the second… but if i didn’t sable in different areas of movement & training, I ultimately would not have found a love for it. I didn’t give up after one try either, I simply pivoted & kept moving forward, what these photos don’t tell you is what I mentally endured through this time, Covid, cancelled shows, i lost my nan, i left everything behind to move states, i lost friends, i found new ones, i found new movements to dabble in, i questioned myself with new goals. But.. I did it.

Did I give up? I think the following photos show I didn’t, the goal post simply kept being moved.
From being heavily underweight & not a clue about the gym, to a body building show, to running a half marathon & now prepping for a full.
From using training as an escape.

Take my advice & listen to #4 if you’re stuck in a vicious cycle of having the desire to lose fat, but you’re stuck at maintaining…

You probably aren’t eating enough 🤷

I know it feels logical to say ‘well if I eat less, I’ll lose fat faster’

But our bodies don’t work like this, they aren’t a machine that speeds up when under fuelled…

When you consistently under eat, here is what’s really happening:

Your energy is going to drop, so there for your training intensity will.
Your recovery will also suffer, meaning you’re not building muscle nor maintaining it.
Your daily movement naturally decreases (think less steps = more sitting = less drive)
Your hunger hormones ramp up, meaning your adherence becomes harder & it becomes easier to fall into binge restrictive cycles.

Your fat loss does not simply come from eating less, it is going to come from eating enough to train with intensity & intention, recover just as hard & become consistent with your plan.

Fat loss does not need to be hard.

If you’re just doing the bare minimum, just ticking a box (ticking off a workout, ticking off X amount of calories a day...

If you’re just doing the bare minimum, just ticking a box (ticking off a workout, ticking off X amount of calories a day, ticking of X amount of steps) & expanding grand results towards your physique & lifestyle… it may be time to re-think your plan.

You may look in the mirror a few months from now wondering why your body’s still not changing or why you haven’t achieved the results you were so desperately chasing..

Look, I get that doing *just enough* might feel like the answer & it may be more than you have been previously doing.
You maybe trying to make this a quicker & more simpler process, especially when life, work, being social ect if already draining enough at times.

And I know the internet keeps telling you all you need is “consistency,” & whilst this is true, consistency will always win, we probably need to chat about your intention with your training..

Are you just hitting your prescribed reps & ticking your sets off? Or are you hitting them with intention & challenging yourself for those reps, getting to the end of your sets & telling yourself you couldn’t have given anymore or that it challenged you?

When you start moving your weights with intention, this is where your progress begins, this is where that desired physique starts to appear & this is where you know you can ask more from yourself…

You’ll become stronger
You’ll become more confident.
You’ll become hungrier for more.
You’ll become HER.
You’ll see change.

Just like these girls did & continue to do.

Confession… I recently burnt out from taking on too much in Jan..

Yep, I’m just like you, tried to do it all & I put my mental health at risk..

I’m not going to dwell on it or call it a year because 1 month out of 12…

So instead I’m going to share with you what I am doing & the questions I am asking myself leading into Feb so this DOESN’T happen again…

1. Life audit > where was I spending my time & did I need to put that much energy into it? Was I putting energy & effort into the wrong things? Was I spending my personal time with the right people & doing the right things?

2. Training & Nutrition > Was I training too much or not enough? What’s a realistic week of training actually look like for me & my lifestyle? I know I could have fuelled my body better as well, I fell victim to being lazy & eating out when I could have meal prepped or chosen better options instead of ‘quick’ food options

3. Being a YES woman > Was I people pleasing or saying yes because I genuinely wanted to? Learning to say NO or NOT NOW is going to be a big learning curve for me moving forward & learning to saying no or not now just because I don’t want to or don’t have the mental capacity too without guilt or having an excuse following it…

Nothing negative about giving yourself constructive criticism, now that I’m on the other side I see where I may have been burning out.

Oh and communication to your peers, family, work mentors & coaches is a high priority when feeling burnt out, let them in to help & maybe take a load off..

The more you do something, the more confident you get with it?

It won’t happen on the first go, but that isn’t a sign to quit.

Consistency should feel supportive, not suffocating, reflect on your current training regime & protocols & see where you can improve!

We all start somewhere & I believe that if we don’t look back we don’t get to see how far we have actually come, my teen years and early adult hood always seen me underweight & on the less muscular side…

It wasn’t until I got introduced to the gym that I started to understand I needed to make a change.

From thinking I wasn’t allowed in a gym to now, going in with confidence in bettering myself for healthier life.

I’ve gone from being content that I didn’t have to work to be skinny many years ago, because society told me that’s what everyone wanted.

To thinking I would find my purpose in body building.

To hating the body building lifestyle and what it put me through post shows.

To many years of self reflection & trying to find my training style.

To now. Happy to just MOVE, move with intention, stay healthy & doing it for the love of it & for a future version of me. Confident & educated..

Genuinely no better feeling to me right now than getting back into RUNNING!!!

I forgot how much I enjoyed it, enjoyed the struggles, the clearness of my mind & the post run endorphins!!

Slowly easing back into it after a hiatus after the GC half, but loving being in this position again!!

Confidence will come over time again, but enjoying the journey to the Queenstown Mara 👀
