We’re proud to share more exciting news from Robina Private Hospital 🎉
Congratulations to Dr Veya Seekis (Griffith University), Melissa Marks, Dr Kim Hurst, Sarah Mackenzie, Grace Barker and Dr Aimee Maxwell (Robina Private Hospital) on receiving a highly competitive Ignite Grant through the Eating Disorders Research & Translation Centre.
Their funded project, The Art of Connection, is a new group-based art therapy program designed to strengthen emotional understanding and connection between people recovering from eating disorders and the people who support them.
Many individuals living with eating disorders experience difficulty identifying and expressing emotions, which can lead to isolation, misunderstanding, and strain on relationships. While art therapy is widely recognised as a powerful tool for emotional exploration, it traditionally focuses on the individual.
The Art of Connection takes a pioneering paired approach, bringing together individuals in recovery and a close supporter (such as a partner, family member or friend) to create artwork side by side. Through guided reflection and shared creative experiences, the program aims to foster trust, improve emotional recognition, and deepen connection in a safe, non-verbal way.
With this funding, the team will formally evaluate the program to explore how it can be implemented across hospital and community settings - supporting recovery through creativity, connection and evidence-based care.
We are incredibly proud of our team and their ongoing commitment to innovative research that delivers real world impact for those affected by eating disorders. 👏
