Aequitas, the central hub for human rights constitutional reform in Australia, has launched with a clear mission in mind: to amend the Australian Constitution to include a Charter of Rights.
Australia is the only western liberal democracy without a Charter of Rights, which means Australians are vulnerable to injustice. Without a Charter or Bill of Rights, many freedoms such as freedom of speech, are not a personal right for Australians.
Human rights violations occur across all sections of Australian society, especially around strip search laws, whistleblowing, digital protections, police oversight, and Indigenous incarceration.
Aequitas will advocate for constitutional reform and state-based legislative change to enshrine an Australian Charter of Rights. The not-for-profit advocacy organisation will also centralise the human rights movement in Australia by connecting advocates, legal advisors, not-for-profit groups, community organisations, constitutional experts, and the media together in a single human rights hub.
Aequitas will act as an information portal for citizens to find information and support to exercise their rights, seek advice and legal support, and connect with a community of human rights advocates. www.aequitasnexus.org.au
