A new Science Advances study connects indoor tanning to a much higher melanoma risk and shows why that risk may be so severe at the DNA level.

Researchers analyzed dermatology records from a large Northwestern patient pool and compared roughly ~3,000 people with tanning-bed history to ~3,000 age-matched non-users. Melanoma appeared more often in tanning-bed users (5.1%) than in non-users (2.1%).

After accounting for factors like age, s*x, sunburn history, and family history, indoor tanning still tracked with an odds ratio of ~2.85—close to a threefold increase.

The study also found melanomas in tanning-bed users showed up more on “sun-shielded” areas (like the lower back and buttocks). That pattern fits the idea that tanning beds can expose—and damage—skin regions that don’t normally get hammered by everyday sun.

To see what was happening at a cellular level, the team sequenced melanocytes (pigment cells where melanoma begins). In the paper’s molecular work, they examined normal-skin samples from 11 heavy tanning-bed users (reporting about 50 to 750+ lifetime sessions) and compared them with matched controls.

They found melanocytes from indoor tanners had higher mutation burdens and a higher share of cells carrying pathogenic (cancer-relevant) mutations, especially in body sites that typically get less natural sunlight—supporting the “wide-field” DNA-damage claim.

Public-health messaging around this is also consistent with existing warnings: ultraviolet radiation from tanning devices has long been treated as a serious carcinogenic exposure, and major health agencies have repeatedly cautioned against indoor tanning.
