I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday season and are ready to make 2021 a great year.

Do you usually set fitness goals for the year ahead? Perhaps an injury is shaking your confidence and you didn't really think about setting goals. Your New Year's fitness resolution may be not to let your injury get the best of you. Maybe you can set your personal resolution around not taking for granted what you can do, and continue on your recovery journey, making sure you don't shy away from the hard stuff like rebuilding your strength. Or you can find ways to improve your independence and sense of empowerment instead of focusing on your limitations.

Our exercise physiologists are here to guide you and ensure you achieve the best outcomes in 2021.

Self-management devices: Resistance Bands
A resistance band is a lightweighted elastic band. It's a versatile and important tool available to help with any injury rehabilitation and strengthening/streching programs.
These stretchable bands offer a safer way to add strength training during rehab than free weights. They are graded in their resistance so that as you get stronger you move through the colours.
It also allow you to exercise isolated muscles without burdening the muscles, tendons, joints and bones of the injured area. When you use resistance bands to exercise the injury-free parts of the body, you benefit from increased blood circulation, which assists with speeding up the recovery.
All in all, resistance bands offer a wide range of benefits. As it can be easily packed, you can mantain your workout regimen, diversify your workouts or self-manage your injury wherever you are.

Whether you are recovering from an injury or hoping to lose weight, recognise that real change happens slow and steady.
A person's readnidess to create behaviour change can be assessed through the following stages of change:
👉 Precontemplation - when a person don't recognise any need for change, other people may express concerns, but the person is in denial that a problem exists.
👉 Contemplation - when a person will recognise the potential consequences of not changing, but is yet not fully commited to making the change.
👉 Preparation - here, a plan for creating change is established.
👉 Action - it's where the behavioral change begins, the steps created during the preparation stage get put into place.
👉 Maintenance - during this stage, a person needs to consider how to maintain change over time and how to deal with the obstacles along the way. It's important to monitor the progress and plan ahead for possible problems.
To help someone else to change, identify what stage of change the other person is and assist them move through each stage, talking about the pros and cons, showing how change will be helpful for them.

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS)
MS is a lifelong autoimmune condition that affects the brain and spinal cord, resulting in a wide range of symptoms that vary from person-to-person, and also depends upon the location of affected nerve fibers.
MS happens when the immune system attacks a fatty material called myelin, the protective sheath that covers nerve fibers. Without this outer shell, the nerves become damaged and the brain cannot send signals through the body correctly.
Some of the commonly observed symptoms include:
- numbness or weakness in one or more limbs
- tingling or pain in various parts of the body
- electric-shock sensations that occur with certain neck movements
- tremor, balance problems
- lack of coordination of different body parts
- slurred speech while speaking
- prolonged double vision
- pain during of movement of eye and parcial or complete vision loss
- fatigue
MS can be managed with medications and lifestyle adjustments, including a healthy diet and exercise. The goal is to reduce inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, to slow the formation of new brain lesions and minimise the rate of MS flare-ups, called relapses.
