Children and teenagers are still developing — emotionally, socially, and mentally. While social media can offer connection, it can also expose young people to pressures they may not yet be equipped to manage.
Research shows that excessive social media use can impact sleep, self-esteem, emotional regulation, and real-world social confidence. Online comparison, cyberbullying, and constant digital stimulation can be overwhelming — especially for young people who require additional support.
For NDIS participants, online spaces can present increased risks, including vulnerability to bullying, exploitation, or misinformation. That’s why structured support, supervision, and clear boundaries are so important.
Australia’s approach is focused on protection, not punishment. By creating clearer limits around social media use, families, carers, and support providers are better equipped to guide young people toward healthier habits, safer online engagement, and meaningful participation in their communities.
Through the NDIS, supports can help young people build confidence, develop social skills, and strengthen real-world connections — ensuring wellbeing both online and offline.
💛 Supporting young people means meeting them with care, understanding, and the right support at the right time.
