Today is World Autism Awareness Day, a time to promote understanding, acceptance, and meaningful inclusion of autistic individuals from all backgrounds.

As a team with both lived and extensive professional experience supporting autistic individuals, we take this opportunity not only to advocate for acceptance, but to genuinely celebrate the unique strengths, perspectives, and “superpowers” of the clients we work alongside.

While we support our clients to build skills and navigate challenges, we also learn just as much from them. Even in this past week alone, we’ve shared so many moments of joy and learning from in-depth reptile knowledge and passionate environmental advocacy, to some truly impressive marble run engineering.

It is a privilege to learn from our clients every day, and we are continually inspired by who they are.

We’re excited to share that one of our Occupational Therapists has just completed a 3-week Professional Development course focused on supporting toileting goals 🚽

Toileting skills are such an important part of independence, confidence, and participation in everyday life. For many children, learning these skills can involve overcoming sensory, motor, communication, or routine-based challenges, and having the right strategies in place can make a huge difference.

This specialised training by Kids That Go will further strengthen our team’s ability to:
✔️ Support children and families working toward toileting independence
✔️ Address sensory, motor, and regulation factors impacting toileting
✔️ Develop practical, individualised toileting strategies
✔️ Provide evidence-informed guidance to families and caregivers

We’re incredibly lucky to have access to fantastic ongoing development training to allow us to provide high-quality, evidence-informed therapy to the children and families we support.

This week we’re celebrating 12 months with our wonderful Occupational Therapist, Madi.

Over the past year, Madi has built truly exceptional relationships with the children and families she supports. Her warmth, empathy and genuine care create a safe space where children feel understood, confident and empowered to grow.

The positive feedback we consistently receive from families speaks volumes — not just about her clinical skill, but about the trust and connection she fosters in every interaction.

We are so grateful for the dedication, professionalism and heart she brings to our team each day. Thank you, Madi, for the meaningful difference you make in the lives of the families we work with.

Congratulations on your first year — we’re so lucky to have you as part of the Steps Together team, and we can’t wait to see what year two brings.

We’re sharing this post from Yellow Ladybugs because it offers some really thoughtful tips for making the holiday season more inclusive for everyone.

A gentle reminder to our families that holiday joy doesn’t look the same for all. For some, it’s bright lights, busy gatherings, and singing carols. For others, it’s quiet moments, low-stimulus time, and being with just a few loved ones.

Both are meaningful. Both are festive.🎄

Do what works best for you and your family — that’s what truly matters this season. ✨

This week I was reminded that, in children’s therapy, it’s often the smaller moments that make the biggest impact.

One of our little superstars⭐️ gave us this gorgeous drawing inside a Christmas card. Rather than a traditional festive picture, he chose to draw himself and his Occupational Therapist playing Jumping Jack — because that connection, that shared joy, is what truly matters to him.

And judging by those expressive little faces he added, I think it’s safe to say our emotional regulation work is coming along beautifully!

It’s moments like these that fill our hearts and remind us why we do what we do. 🎄✨
