The significance of Sports Eye Safety Month lies in its focus on preventing eye injuries that can lead to permanent vision loss.

Eye injuries are common in many sports, with activities involving projectiles like basketball and baseball posing high risks.

Protective eyewear can prevent more than 90% of these injuries. It’s crucial to start this habit young, as children are especially vulnerable.

Awareness and education during this month aim to ensure that both players and spectators understand the importance of eye safety in sports.

Close the Gap Day, eye care related, focuses on eliminating the significant vision health gap for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who suffer higher rates of blindness and poorer access to services, through community-led initiatives, cultural safety training for health workers, better regional access (telehealth, visiting optometrists), and addressing historical fears. Key efforts involve better funding, technology, and coordinated care, supported by organisations like The Fred Hollows Foundation, Vision 2020 Australia, and RANZCO, aiming for health equity by 2030, as eye health is crucial for overall wellbeing.

International Women's Day (IWD) highlights the significant gender disparities in eye health, where women and girls are disproportionately affected by vision loss (55% of cases), often due to poverty, lack of access, and limited opportunities in the eye care workforce, with organizations like The Fred Hollows Foundation, Orbis, and Optometry Australia advocating for equity, supporting female eye health professionals, and promoting accessible care to break cycles of poverty.
