This International Women’s Day we’re celebrating the amazing women working at Central Coast Local Health District and the contribution they make to our community.

Dr Amy Birtwistle is a Staff Specialist in palliative care and Director of Physician Education at Wyong Hospital. She was a Staff Member of the Year finalist at our 2025 Caring for the Coast Awards.

Amy is committed to providing palliative care that is focused on dignity, comfort and support for patients and their families. Her colleagues say that she inspires those around her to lead with empathy and kindness, creating an environment of respect and inclusivity.

Amy says, “I’m passionate about building a positive culture and we can all make a difference by being kinder and more compassionate in the way we treat each other.”

♥👏Thank you, Amy, for everything you do, caring for our community.

Check out the heart of NSW Health! We're so proud of Jess, Mitch and Hayley who represented Central Coast Local Health District at the Sydney Mardi Gras parade on Saturday.

Jess said it was an amazing night with many highlights, “There was no rain on this parade! There were hearts everywhere. I loved meeting so many different people and dancing down Oxford Street with my NSW Health colleagues,” said Jess.

Thank you and well done to everyone involved ❤🏳️‍🌈

This wonderful group of motivated high school students has taken an early step into careers in health by joining our Aboriginal School-based Traineeship Program (SBAT).

Over the next two years, they’ll spend one day a week working in our hospitals, gaining practical experience while completing their studies through TAFE NSW. They will be supported by our staff and mentors from our community partner, Bara Barang.

It’s a great opportunity for the students to explore their interests, build confidence and develop real skills in a supportive environment.

This program plays an important part in shaping our future workforce and helping ensure our community continues to be cared for by knowledgeable and committed people for years to come. We’re proud to support them as they begin their journey.

Many of these SBAT opportunities are funded through the Elsa Dixon Aboriginal Employment Grant, which is designed to support Aboriginal people to access employment and career development pathways in the NSW Public Sector and contributes to broader efforts in Closing the Gap.

🙌💕A big thank you to Gosford Hospital Auxiliary for their donation of two new pieces of equipment for our Respiratory Investigation Unit.

💨New niche spirometer
This device helps our team check how well a patient’s lungs are working before surgery and allows us to monitor respiratory conditions over time. These tests are vital to keeping patients safe and ensuring they get the right care at the right moment.

😴 Variable positive airway pressure machine
Used in our Sleep Study Unit, this machine automatically measures and adjusts the air pressure a patient needs to keep their airways open while they sleep. This assists with diagnosing and treating sleep related breathing issues.

We’re incredibly grateful to Gosford Hospital Auxiliary for their ongoing commitment to supporting our patients, staff and services.

Today on World Mental Health Nurses’ Day, we’re celebrating our wonderful mental health nurses, including Alannah and Kristy, who have shared their reflections on the profession.

“Mental health nursing is a privilege. People allow us into the most vulnerable chapters of their lives and that trust should never be taken lightly. Small moments like listening, sitting with someone, and showing kindness can make a lasting difference,” Alannah said.

“Being able to listen when someone is going through one of the hardest moments of their life is very impactful. Sometimes it’s not about fixing anything, it’s about being present, validating their experience and helping them feel seen, heard and supported.”

For Kristy, creating a safe space for someone in crisis is one of the most meaningful aspects of mental health nursing.

“Being present, listening without judgement, validating a person’s experience and offering calm, consistent support. Those moments of connection can significantly influence a person’s recovery trajectory,” Kristy said.

“Mental health challenges touch everyone in some way. Recovery is possible, though it looks different for everyone. Mental health nursing requires a specialised combination of clinical expertise, trauma informed thinking, emotional intelligence and collaboration.”

Thank you to Alannah, Kristy and all mental health nurses for the important work you do every day supporting people experiencing mental illness.
