With high temps predicted for the next few days, we need to be taking extra special care of our animal friends.
Some things you can do include:
☀ Making sure they have access to plenty of shade and they have access to extra water, just like Dr Elvie & Geoffrey!
☀ If possible, bring pocket pets, (rabbits and guinea pigs), and birds inside. Our small friends often struggle the most with the heat. If you can't bring them in, make sure they have access to shade and consider putting a frozen water bottle or two in their enclosure, it's like DIY air-con!
☀ Don't walk your dog in the hottest part of the day. And check the temperature of the path before walking them. If you can't comfortably stand on the ground in bare feet, then they shouldn't be walking on it.
☀ NEVER leave pets in the car, even if the car is in the shade and the windows are down. The temperature inside the car can easily be 30'C higher than the outside temp.
☀ Consider putting out shallow water dishes for wildlife in your garden, if it's safe to do so.

📢Changes to Dog Breeding Laws 📢
New laws have been passed for ANYONE breeding dogs, which now included accidental litters.
This law now includes:
🐶 Mandatory breeder identification numbers
🐶Lifetime breeding caps for dogs
🐶Mandatory ID requirements for the sale & transfer of dogs
🐶Restrictions on dogs numbers, plus more.

Breeding dogs or buying puppies?

From today, the NSW Government laws have changed for breeding dogs in NSW.

Laws now include:
• Mandatory breeder identification numbers
• Lifetime breeding cap for dogs
• Minimum staff-to-dog ratios
• Mandatory ID requirements for sale or transfer of dog
• Restrictions on dog numbers, plus more.

When she’s not here with us being a superstar nurse, Nurse Chloe is being a superstar barrel racer! Her dedication and training has paid off with her recently being awarded the 2025 ATRA Australian 1D Barrel Race Champion!
And proving that the cowgirl genes clearly run in the family, her daughter Macy was also awarded the 2025 ATRA Australian 7 & Under Barrel Race Champion!
Both Nurse Chloe and Macy will be sporting shiny new buckles!

🎃 Happy Howl-oween!!! If you are heading out Trick or Treating today, make sure you keep your chocolates and lollies out of reach of your pets. Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats and can be fatal if they eat enough. Some lollies contain artificial sweeteners that can also be toxic to both dogs and cats. If your pet does get into your howl-oween treats, call us for advice.

A double birthday celebration this week, which means double the cake!
We celebrated Nurse Bri’s birthday which was also a congratulations on getting through her exams. And then we celebrated a milestone birthday for Dr Mandy! Not sure how she can have been a Vet for over 30 years when she has just turned 21…

All of this lovely sunshine has meant we have seen an increase in the number of snake bite cases. We saw 5 cases in a single 24 hour period last week alone!

Signs of a snake bite in pets can include:
🐍 Sudden weakness or collapse which can be followed by some temporary improvement
🐍Panting or laboured breathing
🐍 Salivating and/or vomiting
🐍 Shaking or twitching muscles
🐍 Paralysis
🐍 Blood in urine
🐍 Dilated (large) pupils

Snake bites can be fatal, making them a time critical emergency. If your pet has been bitten, if you find your pet with a snake, (either a dead or alive snake), or even if you think they may of been bitten, they need IMMEDIATE veterinary attention. It is always best to call prior to your arrival at the hospital. This gives the veterinary team a chance to set up for the emergency, giving your pet the best chance of survival.
