Rabobank flagged earlier this year that urea had already settled into a "new normal" price range — meaningfully above where it sat for most of the last decade. Then escalating conflict in the Middle East put fresh pressure on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global fertiliser supply.

This isn't a one-off shock. It looks more like a new reality — higher input costs, season after season. For farmers already working tight margins, that's a serious problem. But it also raises a question worth asking:

𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐀𝐬 𝐀𝐧 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐱

Most farmers think about soil in terms of what's in it: NPK levels, pH, organic matter.

But those numbers don't explain why nutrients often fail to reach the crop.

𝗦𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺.

Clay particles and organic matter carry negative charge. Nutrients—calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron—carry positive charge. They attract. They hold. They exchange.

A chelating molecule wraps around a nutrient ion—holding it dissolved in soil water, preventing it from clumping back into an insoluble solid, keeping it mobile enough to reach a root.

Nature does this constantly through healthy soil biology.

Mycorrhizal fungi produce oxalic and citric acids at their hyphal tips—natural chelators—wrapping around iron and aluminium ions, pulling phosphorus off the surfaces where it's stuck, keeping nutrients flowing as ions instead of locked as particles.

- When that biology collapses, the chemistry collapses with it. Nutrients clump. Flow stops. The matrix stagnates.

Seed Primer on Lupins (WA-light soils)
Benefits of seed primer on lupins in light soils

1. Faster, more even emergence

Light soils dry out quickly and can crust or blow. A seed primer helps lupin seed:

Take up moisture more efficiently
