Officially One year of full time Pillar!

Never been someone to do anything outside of safety, so this was a big deal for me. Luckily, my close circle encouraged me to go out solo and here we are.

Pillar would not be possible without a few key people

1) My wife Rose, who is dealing with the chaos at home with 2 young girls, while still encouraging and pushing me to be the best version of myself

2) The team at Stepping into the environment they have created, and being able to work closely with a team of high quality EPs, with exceptional facilities, makes Pillar be able to operate with ease.

3) My close and extended family for checking in, offering advice and being supportive.

Overall, a huge year. Lots of lessons learnt, lots of layers of the onion peeled back, and lots of growth opportunities seized.

Next year, employing a weapon physio, assisting the throughout the GFL season, and continuing to grow Pillar Sports Physio.

Thanks to everyone who has booked in, checked in and been supportive.

Running Assessment 🏃‍♂️

Running assessments and a key offering at Pillar Sports Physiotherapy. They are an in depth assessment looking at Biomechanics, Mobility, Muscular endurance, Strength and plyometric capacity.

We would tailor this to your running goals (Long distance, middle distance, sprinting or sport related) and your injury history.

We perform the tests, compare them to Normative data and develop a plan, including necessary interventions.

I will be releasing a Video series next week outlining what this looks like

Let us know if you would like any more information!

Here’s Jacob. GFL footballer, Exercise Physiologist extraordinaire, keen cyclist and outstanding bloke.

He had been dealing with some generalised groin pain over the last few months, which peaked towards the end of the season.

After performing some testing we discovered that he
- lacked power off of his right leg
- had decreased strength in his hip abductors and hip flexors
- adductors actually tested quite well

Here are some exercises we used to guide Jacob back to running and change of direction. Still work to do regarding training loads and exposures but we have seen some good progress.

1. KB Eccentric hip flexion - Directly targeting hip flexor strength, especially while lengthening.

2. Curtesy lunge to Hip Lock -Used to bias some hip internal rotation and create strength in the frontal plane.

3. Lateral hip lock to box - Progressing a hip lock to involve lateral movement and get some length through the stance leg adductor.

4. Banded Acceleration Step- shifting focus to power based exercise, this focusses on develop hip extension during some acceleration shapes

5. Banded Drop + Drive- Great for developing an understanding of using the Inside leg as leverage for COD tasks.

This is Rose. I’m lucky enough to call her my Wife. Rose just completed the Noosa triathlon in a time of 2:45, proudly beating my previous time by 6mins (I have not stopped hearing about it)

Planning her sessions and managing niggles was an interesting one. She’s a full time marketing manager, Super Mum and Yoga instructor. She doesn’t have 10+ hours a week to train, we had to make the most of the little time we had.

Part of this involved sessions being low volume but high intensity. This needed us to have a big focus on recovery.

Something that really helped Rose was her passion for Yoga and Flexibility. Along with regular strength training, We included these stretches in her routine. She would complete 2 rounds of each, holding for 60-90s depending on tolerance.

1. Downward dog + calf paddles - Great for mobility through the posterior chain, especially the calf complex

2. Cross Leg Sit - Targets the posterior hip. Can regress to both ankles on ground if needed

3. Couch stretch - Targeting Hip flexor / anterior thigh, commonly restricted in cyclists and runners

4. Toe Sit - Targets the underside of the foot and calf complex
