Protect your spine and Work Well Every Day! October is a time to commit to building safe and healthy workspaces for all Australians and to raise awareness of the physical and mental impact musculoskeletal injuries have on Australian workers, which costs the economy over $55 billion annually.

Everyone deserves to work in a safe and healthy environment - whether you’re on-site, on the road, at a desk, working from home, or on your feet, it’s essential to take steps to prevent work-related injuries which can create musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs).

To align with Safe Work Month's ‘Reviewing Workplace Controls’ focus week, the Chiropractors Association’s annual WorkSpace Week (20-26 October) is inviting Australians to join the WorkSpace Week movement and highlight WMSD prevention and early intervention to improve the spinal health and well-being of all Australian workers.

Adjust your thinking to work well EVERY day! Visit workspaceweek.org.au for hints, tips and free resources, or to consult a chiro, because prevention IS the best protection.

World Spine Day, held on 16th of October each year, is a key opportunity to promote spinal health, prevention, and access to quality care.
As the largest global initiative dedicated to spinal health, it highlights the impact of spinal pain and disability while encouraging proactive steps for lifelong health.
Launched in 2008, World Spine Day is organised by the World Federation of Chiropractic, of which the ACA is the Australian member.
Today, more than 600 organisations worldwide support the initiative annually.
Through this campaign, people are encouraged to care for their spines and stay active by maintaining good posture, engaging in regular physical activity, practicing safe lifting techniques, and supporting healthy working conditions.

Is Your Child’s Backpack A Source Of Spinal Stress?
By Jeanne Ohm, DC

We know that back pain is the most common ailment among working Australian adults. Even more significant than back pain and associated injury is the implications that postural distortions have on nerve system function. These postural adaptations can cause spinal nerve stress. Stress to the nervous system can adversely affect numerous functions in the body leading to a wide array of health concerns.

Chiropractors offer these tips for safe backpack use:
• Wear both straps and avoid the one-strap styled back packs. Uneven distribution of the load causes postural compensations and spinal stress.
• When putting on and removing backpacks, bend at the knees or have the pack at a higher level such as on a desk or table. Sudden twisting motion adds to the potential of injury.
• Arrange the backpack so it rests evenly in the middle of the back. Shoulder straps should be adjusted to allow the child to put on and take off the backpack without difficulty and permit free movement of the arms. Straps should not be too loose, and the backpack should not extend below the lower back.
• Keep the load at 10-15% or less of the student’s bodyweight. Carry only those items that are required for the day. Request additional textbooks to be kept at home instead of hauling heavy books to and from school.
• Organize the contents of the backpack by placing the heaviest items closest to the back.

WORKSPACE WEEK AUGUST 2022

Let 's talk about our workspace and how to keep our spine happy and healthy while at the desk.

Due to long-running COVID-19 lockdowns and persistent calls to work from home caused by ongoing outbreaks, the majority of Australians have spent the past three years working between home and office locations, with the risks to the health of those not working in ergonomically correct workspaces causing concern.
Since the pandemic began there’s been numerous studies and surveys conducted by researchers, governments, organisations and healthcare professionals looking at the benefits and disadvantages of working from home. While results found that many have enjoyed the increased flexibility that’s improved their work/life balance; a major downside has been that with more people working in non-ergonomic settings, chiropractors are seeing a surge in patients suffering neck pain, shoulder stiffness, headaches and lower back pain.
With hundreds-of-thousands of Australians now regularly working from home and many yet to adjust to their ‘new normal’, in launching the inaugural national Workspace Week (22-28 August 2022) the Australian Chiropractors Association (ACA) aims to address concerns that workers’ may be risking their spinal health and overall wellbeing if they haven’t adapted to their new workspace environments by adopting safe work habits.
Following the survey conducted by the ACTU which found 42% of Australians working from home did not have a suitable workstation or the correct equipment; and the Federal Government’s announcement in August 2021 that up to two-thirds of Australians were still working from home, the ACA developed new effective resources to help Australians maintain a healthy spine.
To change the way Australians’ work from home the ACA’s national Workspace Week aims to alert Australians to the potential risks of unsafe workspace practices due to poorly set up workspaces at home.
During national Workspace Week we are encouraging anyone using a computer at home, albeit for work or study, to learn some simple steps that may improve postural correctness and create an ergonomic workspace.
Those experiencing neck, shoulder, back pain and headaches and those concerned about their spinal health when working remotely should contact us today to make an appointment. Our team at ACT Chiropractic can help you learn how to set up your workspace correctly so you can develop safe workspace practices and provide you with advice on exercise programs specific to your needs.
We’re also encouraging everyone to participate in Workspace Week by jumping online and downloading the ACA’s free Workspace Week resources to help maintain your overall health and wellbeing, allowing you to work well from anywhere.
ACA’s Workspace Week Checklist can assist people to work safely in an ergonomic setting, while using the Straighten Up app to improve posture, stabilise core muscle groups, and enhance overall health and wellbeing.
By using these free tools and implementing positive spinal health habits including using an ergonomic office chair, adjusting your laptop to eye level and positioning your knees slightly below your hips when sitting, you can help prevent potential physical injuries when working remotely.
For more information about Workspace Week, to download the Workspace Checklist and the free Straighten Up App visit workspaceweek.org.au.
For advice on how you can work well from anywhere contact us on 02 6262 0880 today to make an appointment.
